URGENT READ for fabricators!!!
Just found this on another forum--
http://www.brewracingframes.com/id.75htm
If you can't get it, this is a quick over view--
A welder was cleaning a surface for patching using brake cleaner. He used a torch to dry off residual brake cleaner.
While he was working, he noticed a small whisp of smoke... turned out to be a poison gas used in WW 1!!! ( Phasogene, phosgene or something like that )
Symptoms include--
seizure, vertigo, constipation, kidney failure, chronic bronchitis, emphosima. Maybe a few more, writing from memory.
Be careful out there!!!

Re: URGENT READ for fabricators!!!
This has been popping up on every forum for the last couple of months
I don't know about over there but here Tetracholorethene and similar chlorine compounds have been outlawed here for ages. A real common one was called "tri" for trichloroethane, Tetrachloroethene is also called perchloroethene, or " per". It used to be commonly used in dry cleaning. Brake solvents here don't contain it anymore.

Half the chemicals in my garage are going to emit high concentrations of noxious gases if I use a torch to dry them. One of the first things they taught me in school was WHMIS, and they mandated that we read the MSDS and take notes on safety procedures, PPE required, first aid measures, and safe disposal for any chemical we used.

Usually solvants with those compounds say specifically not to expose them to a source of flame due to the emmissions of toxic fumes. If you ignite it and kill yourself, its kind of your own fault.

Re: URGENT READ for fabricators!!!
they're not really that flammable, but when exposed to heat or combustion they do give off phosgene... not good.
carb cleaner is sort of the opposite, it is very flammable, but besides that not that dangerous to you (besides the flames) when burned, but it does permiate skin and get into your system much easier than brake cleaner.
the fact is that most things that are helpful around the shop can be dangerous if misused... don't do dumb **** and if you do, don't blame anyone but yourselves. It seems like way too much "good" (as in actually works well) stuff has been made illegal or hard to get to protect the idiots from themselves.
