Formula 350 rear end in IROC PMD spekers in IROC
Two quesitons.
1st question:
Was at a junk yard today and found an '87 350 Formula. I was amazed original window sticker was there inside the car, so I knew what options it had. It still has the rearend in it and for '87 and 5.7 it would have 3.27 gears. Will that rearend slid right into an 89 IROC (I have a Borg Warner 2.77) and the Formula should still have rear disc brake right?
2nd question.
Same Formula had an upgraded sound system. I went ahead and pulled the rear speakers - will they also work in the IROC? I am not into the Bose setup for the Camaro option.
Original window sticker that was in it.

1. yes 2. yes.
the only difference in the rears should be the brakes and gears.
being you have a IROC Id think you should have the same gears??
89 was the 1st year for good rear disc brakes.
stock speakers prolly arent worth swaping? Id use aftermarket..
do you have pix of the car?? I know a guy that needs parts pm me

No pics of the car. I want stock parts (or at least OEM). I am in my 40's, so stereos are not a high priority but I at least want some beats. I've done the whole amps, subs DVD changer and flip out TV's.
My rear is a disc setup but I have 2.77 gears. I can shoot a pic tomorrow. What parts is your buddy looking for? I will PM you too.

I'd like to know which junkyard you went to, to find this car. I'm sure you know they don't last long and get pick really fast around here.
Also it looks like that car has drum brakes so its not a direct bolt in . If I were you I'd get anything I could off that car. if its in good shape those parts sell fast.

Patrick. I used to live (still have an apartment) in Ellisville, MO (right at Clarkson and Manchester). Not too far from you now. PM me and I will get you the info. Might run over today to the yard, just to see what rear. I thought I saw disc and rotors on there, so maybe someone changed the rear?

The rear end would be a decent upgrade you'd actually feel. But you'll want to strip down your current axle and the junkyard axle and keep your 89 disc brakes since they use larger rotors and PBR calipers that actually do something. The earlier cast iron calipers are junk, and stop worse then drums.
The Firebird sound system is a waste unless you take all of it, and even if you did I'd suggest selling it rather then trying to swap it in. The 4" subwoofers were OK when they were new but even the cheapest name brand crap from Walmart would sound better and be easier to install. If you want to make a buck, you need the adapter harness between the dash and radio, the amplifier from under the passengers side of the dash, the amp power/gain switch from the dash (and all wiring for it), along with the speaker harness for the rear speakers. I wouldnt hurt to pull the from speakers, and be sure to get the entire subwoofer boxes from the rear. I haven't seen a set sell recently, but they used to be worth a couple hundred anyway.

The speakers - this is what I got out of the car. I didn't know where the amp was located but there are still some pieces in the dash. I also found some Camaro kick panel Bose speakers. I think the car would still have it's amp since no one has pulled off the panel under or behind the dash. I was thinking of grabbing the ECM and if there is an amp, I'll grab it.

Re: Formula 350 rear end in IROC PMD spekers in IROC
The BOSE system is worthless unless you get ALL of it too. The components are completely incompatible.
You've got the rear speaker housings, but by themselves they're almost as worthless as the kick panel speakers. At least the Pontiac speakers can be driven off a normal stereo. As mentioned, aftermarket 6x9's will sound better and be easier to install.
Here's a pic of the dash switch...

And another of the whole setup I sold a few years ago for $175. I'd probably set the starting price at about $200-250 now. I only had one of the subs, but two amps, all of the wiring, and two sets of dash speakers.

The rear boxes by themselves are probably worth about $50... They aren't worth much without the rest of the system.

No you really can't. Maybe if you were dealing with a 10 bolt, but 9 bolt gears are going to cost you at least $150 for the gear set. Figure in the cost of 6 bottles of gear oil, limited slip additive, a crush sleeve, and the labor... You're talking about a $400-600 gear swap vs $150, clean it up, add fresh fluid and roll out. $150 is a steal, jump on it.

Then I will have to go over to the IROC being parted and grab the rest of its items too... I usually sell items if they won't work. Too much stuff to try and start holding onto items others will use.
Re: Formula 350 rear end in IROC PMD spekers in IROC
I pulled pieces of the UQ7 system out of two cars, and a subwoofer from a Fiero to get the stuff in the pics. I was still short a subwoofer and it would have been a step down from a set of cheap 6x9s. So I sold it and invested the money elsewhere.
The head unit is typical Pontiac, there's nothing special about it. They basically wired 4x6s in place of the 6x9s and ran an extra set of wires in the rear harness, from the amp to the subs. The harness for the amp plugs in between the normal dash harness and the radio. It tucks under the dash, crosses to the passenger's side and down the rocker panel. At the back it goes to the passengers speaker location, then over the trans tunnel to the driver's.
Here's a couple more pics of the harness...

I almost forgot... Grab the proportioning valve for the brakes too. Then you can put the old disc brakes on your 2.77 rear and sell it as a complete package to someone who wants the rear for the disc brakes.

Well I went back today. The sub gain switch was nlot in the car but got what I thik is the rest of it. Am I missing anything that anyone can tell?
Thank you Drew for the heads up on what I was leaving behind. There is a gain switch on eBay for maybe $35.00 right now.

Re: Formula 350 rear end in IROC PMD spekers in IROC
It looks like you got most of it... The gain switch isn't too hard to come by. Most people don't remove them since without the stock style cover plate it leaves a hole in the dash. The speakers, boxes, and wiring are usually gone or hacked up so bad they can't be saved. It looks like at most you're missing the switch and it's harness, everything else looks to be there.
