Viper Powered 85 Z28

Hello everybody,

I just started my first major project of putting a Gen 4 Viper Motor in an 85Z28. Yeah Yeah haters I know but if it wasn't for people who thought out of the box then you wouldn't have cars like the Cobra, Tiger Sunbeam, Superbird...... and many more. So for the Chevy fans I am trying to make it as stock looking as possible with a few minor exceptions. The interior is going to be very modern as well as the drivetrain and suspension. I just started the tear down and will post as soon as I start the first build-up. Unless you guys want to see the deconstruction. The first problem I encountered was a rear end hit some time ago. Very Very bad repair.

Re: Viper Powered 85 Z28

Almost like this more than a LSx swap. But that viper engine is REALLY long. You sure it will even fit? It's tight with an LS engine.

Re: Viper Powered 85 Z28

This sounds almost as crazy as my idea to create a modern version of the second gen firebird engineering special called the Pegasus. They put a Ferrari V-12 in a 71 Firebird. I was gonna stuff a Ferrari 550 Maranello V12 and trans into a third gen. Those who didn't scream crack pipe said it would be awesome, but its not happening without serious engineering and modifications. Same could be said for the viper motor. Best of luck, hope you do pull this off somehow. For all I know I might come across a wrecked Ferrari and somehow pull off my own idea. And if you ever do make progress, I'm with the others. Pics!

Saw a Datsun Z with a viper motor in it. They had to cut the center out of the firewall and move it back 6" but if it can fit in that i'm sure it will fit in a 3rd gen.

Re: Viper Powered 85 Z28

The engine will fit, I did some research and front to rear is 34.5", 23" across the valve covers and 26" pan to intake. The torque wont be a problem with the full frame and cage welded to frame. Thanks for the interest. I will post pics soon. Also I came across a ferrari engine in a late model mustang. The cool part was they kept it mid engine.

Re: Viper Powered 85 Z28

Yep, it should fit, I thought I seen something like this done before but cant recall. I know they put a Lt5 motor ina thirdgen...that was pretty awesome.

Only problem I see, is will the exhaust manifolds allow for exhaust to go down in the factory thirdgen location? May need to fab a set of headers for it.

Else a tubular K-member could help free up some room and give more mounting options with the motor.

They did that mostly for oil pan fitment reasons, something about how the oiling system, or crank clearance from the oil pan. They made a custom crossmember to push it as far forward as possible.

If it wasn't for my insurance, there would be a second Viper powered Datsun S30.

The real question is though.....

Was it ever actually done/really tried? Or was it one of those "What if?" moments in the shop?

Re: Viper Powered 85 Z28

Not sure. I have searched on this forum for the threads but the only one that had a pic was short and never updated. I found a link to the supposive build on Viper Club of America forums, but the link was old and didnt work. I went to VCOA forums and searched but found nothing so not sure what happened to this project.

Re: Viper Powered 85 Z28

I have some starter pics showing that this is going to happen and it is not just an idea. Of course the beast will have a full cage-to-frame. Other mods are:
one piece fiberglass electric ram flip nose
butterfly flip fiberglass doors w/power windows
I am designing shock hinges for the rear glass(I hate the long arm gas shocks)
complete custom interior(obviously)
independent rear suspension
Z 06 front suspension
shaved doors
Fisk electronics(no keys for this beast)
also glassing a gen 4 viper hood into the camaro hood
zinik z-28 rims rears 18 fronts 17
flushing all the ground effects to the panels so its seamless
Thats the start of it and we shall see what I come up with later.

Re: Viper Powered 85 Z28

Wow everybody. I really appreciate the support. I am not a wealthy man, just determined to do what no one has done before. I don't think that other 2003 addition was completed. I am also contemplating twin turbos. I figure why the hell not!!!

Twin turbo vipers aren't horribly uncommon, I know Hennessey has done a couple. Ever heard of Sir Hiss? Dodge Viper with a blown big block chevy. You're not breaking entirely new ground, but it's the first viper powered camaro that I've heard proposed. Good luck!

Well I know I am not breaking new ground on engine swaps. Of course I know all about the twin turbo Vipers. I am talking about a twin turbo viper powered camaro. Thats the new ground.

Heck if you needed to fab new headers to fit the car anyway...might as well make some log manifolds for turbos! I like where your head is at.

Wasn't trying to downplay your project, i just meant that you're not starting from scratch, you have shoulders to stand on to reach new heights.

Re: Viper Powered 85 Z28

Its been quite a few years back, but there was one guy on the board that did the swap. It was a yellow camaro and he posted pics of the finished product. If I remember correctly, he caught a lot of flack for it.

Here are a few posts, but some of the links are dead. I did find one pic.

Maybe Zepher saved some pics from the link.
