Yes you should, there is a thread around here that has all measurements and shows exactly how its done. I will try and find it for you.

bad thing about sheet metal is that it only flexes once then it needs either adjusting or replacing. you can make your own from plastic, that's what a lot of guys do in dirt racing where cooling efficiency is so important in a harsh environment.

I also went for a plastic airdam in the end. Mostly because these things take a beating and I had to replace it once already because I hit a speed bump.
Easiest way to go about it is to pick up a piece of metal, bend it at an 80° angle, drill holes to make it fit the radiator support (you need to cut out a small piece in the center. About 2" or 3" wide because the radiator support has a small bump there)
Then drill some holes to fit your plastic airdam and pick up a piece of high density styrofoam or the material chevyracingrox posted a link to.
Looks a bit like this when done:
