Crazy Idea??
I have a crazy Idea and not sure if it would work or not. I have had alot of problems with my 87 camaro breaking down. Mostly within a couple miles of my house and most of it is stupid stuff to fix and not that hard.
My question is has anyone taken a rear hitch and fitted it with a trailer tongue to be able to lift the rear wheels off the ground and tow it in reverse like a trailer??
I know its crazy but being a fabricator I cant see it not working.
Im trying to figure out a cheap way of getting it home to be able to fix it when it dies that is safer than a tow strap. I dont really have a place or the money for a dolly or that is the way I would go.
Thoughts????

Thought being to have the tow bar low enough that I can jack the car up with a floor jack and hook it to my truck

Re: Crazy Idea??
That's alot of weight your trying to counter lever over the rear of your truck. Lot of stress on whatever kind of hitch you have. Best option in my opinion is car dolly

Even if you did rig something else up the weight on the back would jack the front wheels of the tow vehicle up way to much. You need the extra set wheels under vehicle being towed.

What about a " tow bar " kinda like how a R.V pulls a car behind it.....I have a old one that California outlawed....it wont work on 3rd gens it sets on top a bumper and you chain it to the car....K.I.T.T had one and I think you can buy it...

Re: Crazy Idea??
I have one of those tow bars that is designed for 3rd gens, but the front bumper cover has to be removed to use it. Or I guess you could cut 2 big holes in the bumper cover for it to fit through, but that'd be ugly.

Re: Crazy Idea??
you would need to reinforce the truck and hitch to no end. you would be putting in the ball park of 1000 pounds+ of weight on something that suppose to support at max 500 pounds that wold be if you lifter the rear end the simple solution is a tow chain and a friend to drive the tow vehicle as you steer your car

This is what I am doing now but it takes a lot of cordination between the drivers and I dont always have my normal other driver.
I have also thought of the front tow bar and that is what I was leaning toward doing. I was just trying to come up with a way that I wouldnt have to pull the DS
Like I had said its was a crazy idea I had though of and wanted to see what other opinions were. I hadnt thought of the weight issue and that would be a big problem.
I think I will just go with the front tow bar.

Re: Crazy Idea??
for a tow bar you could make bracket the go into the grille opening and have basicly an a frame the could use pins that you could put in quickly and attach the frame to the brackets

make the car reliable and you don't need to worry about things like this.
using good parts and properly installing them- then learning how to tune- goes a long way with reliability..

Re: Crazy Idea??
This is in the works but Iam not the regular driver of this car and they dont tell me if things dont sound right. I fix every problem as it arises but the previous owner didnt take care of the car so different things keep breaking. Short of rebuilding the engine (which an upgrade will happen in the future) alot has been done to prevent it from breaking down. It is an old car and things happen.

i use a chain through a pipe. it acts like a tow bar. found one of those portable basketball things in the trash. the 3inch pipe comes apart in sections. nice for storage. all you need is somebody to steer. the front vehicle is the brakes and gas. its cheap and efficient. have towed many cars this way over the years. on the 3rd gen i always have to remove the lower air dam though.

Put your time, energy & money into fixing the car so it doesn't break down, then you won't need to worry about towing it home so often.
