Sheet Metal Coolant Overflow Tank

Hey guys,

As my welding skills are coming along I thought a good project for my car was to fabricate and relocate a coolant overflow tank. Only thing I am concerned about is the material of the tank.
Can they be fabricated from steel or do they have to be aluminum? I would be worried about the steel corroding and contaminating the coolant.
Thanks

Some mig welders are easy to set up for welding aluminum like my Lincoln 140.

Is there a particular reason water and glycol need a special material over a fuel tank?
I plan on making my own as well from steel and using a (motorcycle) gas tank sealer kit.

My intercooler tank is aluminum. Uses coolant, so itll hold up

MIG welding a tank will always leave pinholes. Use JB weld or similar to coat the beads for a water tight build. If you want it air tight from the start, it needs to be TIGd

Something like this needs to be tig welded aluminum .090 maybe .060. Are you just wanting a square/rectangle or something more oddly shaped?
