I created a new post, I didn't want to clutter up the other post about Diffuser's so I will put a link in the other threads, if peeps are interested.
I used a .050" aluminum piece powder coated black for the diffuser panel 45" wide x 30" deep (front to back).
I made some stand offs out of 3/4" aluminum, part of the mounting is from existing exhaust hole, I have no exhaust in the rear of the car to deal with so it was easier.
I used .050" aluminum angle powder coated to mount carbon fiber diffuser fins, I made the fins out of 4mm sheet, I used a carbide grit blade in a jig saw, then used a Porter Cable belt sanding unit to get it close, then smoothed the fins out with a 24” Permagrit sanding block, I did have 6 fins but it really looked cluttered so I changed it to 4, they were originally aluminum .050" but looked seriously wimpy thin.
The side winglets will be next, still thinking how they should be...

The sides winglets are left to be done, I am gathering ideas for them, the nice thing is that the car being low, and the diffuser being black is hardly noticeable, except for the trained eye...LOL

Being the first one, there was some trial and error.
I had a sheet metal one made for patterns for $250, installed it drove it around, saw where it rubbed, modded it, then made a winglet template.
My biggest cost was 4mm carbon fiber sheet @$350.
I bought the tools to do this, and afetr i figured how to cut and trim the material, I saw a universal splitter on Craigslist someone was trying to unload for $150 OBO.
If there is a next time, I will buy even a used splitter and cut it up...LOL
I paid $60 to powder coat the pan and the angle pieces.
So lets add it up....
Template $250
Fiber sheet $350
Tools, blades, sanding block $75, the belt disc sander was a huge here.
Powder coat $60
Aluminum round stock $25
machine stand offs $30
$800 total, I have some stand off material left and a whole sheet of carbon fiber which i will work on the winglets and the side plates for a wing.
Could it be done cheaper, yes, after the learning curve.
the 30 x 45 piece fit so nice it was the nicest fitment i've ever had.

Yep, I am doing the sides(winglets) separate, there is some detail involved around the wheel well that will take up some thought.

This is the only I one I have at the moment, I will take another. The car is lowered so it really does not attract a lot of attention, if the car was higher i would have made taller fins.

 

Can you tell it's made a difference while driving?

 

My car use to get a light feeling around 125 and above, kind of skittery, I added a wing (which I'm not sure I'm keeping), I have worked with prototype cars in the ALMS series, I know that the the wing is only part of it, that's why I did the bottom half as well.
The light feel has gone away totally, probably the wing has done 70% of the work, but I did see some distortion in the fins meaning there is a lot more energy going on down there that I imagined. I am going to try a MODIFIED Chris Alston adjustable spoiler (part 6210) as well since I'm not sold on the esthetics of the wings, I am getting the wing powder coated it the same color as the car and cutting out ends caps in carbon fiber. Play, Play, Play and enjoy!
Basically most of you down force comes from above, it was such a challenge to do, I said why not!

 

very nice. only a couple things i would do differently:
-the edge fences should be as near to either end of the bumper cover as possible. quite a lot of turbulent air there.
-the front curve radii should be as large and gentle as possible. i always figured bringing the diffuser as close to the phb as possible would be best aerodynamically. possibly a shorter fence should go the length of the diffuser on each edge all the way forward?

love this iteration. most detailed and functional design so far. any plans for a fiberglass/carbon/kevlar version in teh future?


ps: hide all those bolts in the airflows path.

Agreed. I was kinda pondering the idea of a plate that even covers the rear axle. Granted you must be low enough . My biggest concern is the exhaust though.. You don't have yours in the rear any more do you?

 

Correct, my exhaust exits in front the passenger rear wheel a three in single.

 

Hmmm. I wonder if I can go from the rear axle over the rear exhaust and out the center of the rear bumper cover like yours... What do you think? Do you have any shots from under the car looking up looking at the axle to bumper area?

You need to leave room under the axle for travel up and down from the body.

 

Right, I think my biggest issue is going under the exhaust . But if I can go under the rear axle and further forward on the bottom side of the car. Maybe use limiting straps on my coil overs? It would be much more effective

 

I will get you more diffuser pics, I am going to widen the diffuser with the side winglets and maybe added diffuser fins, I finished my spoiler, I can see now that the car will look better with more work down below and it can't hurt having more air guidance down below. Soon my friend Dennis

Where did you find those rods to stabilize the wing? I've been looking for some to make my own spoiler.

I looked at APR's, Longacre's, Joe's racing, and several others, these were very clean and nice looking.

I had made prototype front splitters out of thin plywood, painted them black, I tried various lengths protruding out and various shapes, round pointy excetera, I kept triming and adjusting, I just did'nt come up with something that added appearance to the car. I don't have any traction issues in the front as of yet, and I can go from a 275/35R18 up to a 295/35R18 if need be and I might anyways. Do it... a lot! Keep playing.

 

Curious how well this works! Seems abit steep but looks like it would put alot of drag on that hatch and push car down. I kinda wanted something that would help hook a roll race car at 60 mph starts and keep me planted to 160+

 

Yes, I had a wing no drag and I could feel the difference as in wow, but it just looked soooo rice looking, since this a muscle machine, I thought I would try this.
I might get a drag spoiler when I go to the Mohave mile Like on of these...

 

Yeah, I figured I'd make a prototype out of plywood then make the real thing when I had it perfected.

 

Depending where your at I surfed on Craigslist in the auto parts section and typed in spiltters, nothing like buying up used carbon fiber splitters for using in various places, you can use them for winglets, diffuser fins, and if you find a big enough one you can use for the front, there is stuff out there that is unused as well.

 

Plenty of Civics with carbon diffusers here in Orlando. I never thought about using used pieces.
