should i be this slow??

i recently bought a 1990 firebird w/ no mods or anything. its a stock lo3 with 130,000 miles on it. i have been looking all over for quarter mile times from the factory but i cant find any. i took it to the track bout a week ago and my fastest time was 17.01 at 80 mph. i was expecting a little more out of my 305. does any one know if thats a normal time or do i need to do a tune up or two?

There are certain things that may give you slower times like altitude for 1.

Where I'm from, compared to L.A. for instance, the altitude diference adds a whole 1/2 second to my time! So if I made a pass and ran 14.8, in L.A. I wouild have ran 14.3, big difference.

I am about 2,200 above sea level, I do not know where you are located but this may be a factor that hurts your time.

Also, is your car tuned up? Lo3's are't really all that great of engines, then again when I had my 84 LG4 Camaro SC, I would run in late 16's with it, so I don't know whats wrong with your situation

is your car auto or manual??

hope this info helps.

A low 16 should be possible.
Have you done a tune up on it? How does the tranny shift?
What were your 60' times? Like said altitude will affect the times too.

Looks like you have some improvement to do in the 60' times. Did you spin off the line?

yeah, it felt like i was spinning them, but not a really long time. some friends of mine who were watching said they could see a little puff of smoke. i was thinking about things i could do to the car and the first place i am going to start is the rear end and suspension. i wanna go from the 2.73 gears (which i think is killing me) to 3.73. plus i am gonna go with posi. i am thinking it will set me back a good 900 but its worth it.

I think 3:42s would help you more, unless you plan on doing a cam swap and adding a free flow exhaust. You really need to match gears to your cam's powerband.

I didn't, went from 2:73s to 3:73 posi, didn't run any faster.

i was under the understanding that the higher the gears the better, unless your at your redline at the end of the run. but maybe i should take your advice. i am pretty sure i wont be doing a cam cause i dont have the time and knowledge to do it myself and i also dont have the money for someone else to do it for me. but i will get an exaust done on it
