S/E Info
S/E Info
Can anybody give me some info about the S/E package? Just bought an '85 cheap, and want to know a lil bit more about what it came with. Couldnt find much with a search, so any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

In 1985 the Firebird S/E was basically the middle of the Firebird line. The 2.8 V6 was standard, the 5.0 LG4 V8 was optional. The car featured TransAm style smoked taillights. The center section was slightly different (it said PONTIAC across the bottom of it). The car also had a TransAm style hood (the S/E hood only has the two front vents it does not have the two smaller vents towards the side/rear of the hood). The only 85/86's I have seen have had the 15" cross lace style wheel. I do not know what wheels the 85 S/E's were originally equipped with. 5,208 Firebird S/E's were built in 1985.
Well I hope that answered a few of your questions, Im sure someone else should be able to add a bit more.

I think it also has some luxury appointments standard, such as acoustical insulation, two-tone unusual-color interior, probably some power options or better radio. also body-colored body side molding, the 86-86 S/E only unique hood and the 85-90 T/A upgrade taillights TAdan mentioned, 14 inch wheels standard but 15 inch with WS6 or F41, S/E sail panel logos instead of eagles, and unique stripes that nobody makes
nobody makes the hood, the body colored side molding, the stripes, the s/e sail panel logos. pretty much everything unique to S/E is extinct. MPFI V6 was standard but you could get a 5-liter V8 if you chose to. not sure about 85-86 but 82-84 usually had a color coded interior with some of the items having matching colors; such as steering wheel, shifter ****, ebrake handle, map pocket, plastic trim pieces, etc (varies from year to year). 1982 was pretty loaded but it got less & less that way through 86 so there were more options at extra cost. 85 was the last year without the mandatory 3rd brake light, so it might have rear washer/wiper? not sure. I think the rear wing was still optional, so it may not have that. the wheel type should be what I call the pre-GTA crosslace wheels. they look a lot like the GTA wheels of 87-92. pic: http://www.gmtips.com/3rd-degree/dox...eels/85f/7.gif I'm getting an S/E info scan from the parts & illustration guide and I'll post it here when I have it, soon.

PROUD owner of an '84 S/E
From what I understand, The S/E could be loaded with more optins than the trans am, but was'nt avalible to be opted with the ground effects or the L69 motor, which also includes the turbo hood and cowl induction set up which was an option only for the trans am. And the S/E is a litt le lighter than the T/A. Im only 90% sure on these specs, but i think the LG4 was rated at 160 or 170 hp, and the L69 at 190hp.
But I'll tell ya, I'm more then happy with my LG4 S/E.
All I've done to it is dule snorkel fresh air, headers, and remove the emissions so far, and this beast pulls, screams, and chirps third gear no problems. Yes, its a 5 speed. People dont beleive me when i tell them i only have the stock 305 under the hood.
Also, forgot to mention, most of the S/E 's came with a 3:73 rear like mine. You got yourself an awsom bird.
P.S. When you run your S/E's VIN through carfax or the DMV, records show is a "SPECIAL EDITION TRANS AM".
mayby thats why my insurence is a killer!

WOOHOO AN S/E BUDDY!
yes, i think ido. this is my girlfrieds computer, and i think she has some pictures of my '84 S/E, and some of my '79 trans am restoration project i've been working on for close to a year now.
i really dont like posting pictures of my beauty (S/E) on the computer, but as soon as i see my girl mayby i'll have her post them. I'm not very good at computers. in fact i hate-(dislike) them. Im only on it for car reasons. Chat with you soon!

It's probably not going to look original after the repaint, since you can't replace the stripes, so if you have any "before" pics, those would be interesting to see

a more recent picture. I was converting the exterior to a trans am. I sold the red power buldge hood. But I still have the T/A fendors and front flare f/x on it.
Ive added fresh power windowed doors too.

(just a previous quote by me)
the color-coded interior was part of the "luxury" tendency of S/E. base firebird and firebird trans am had a more black or plain-looking interior layout where S/E had the vibrant colors that matched the overall interior/exterior color scheme.
Even the rare colored S/E's had custom matching interior. A friend of mine has a 1982 "Light Jadestone" Firebird S/E, which was a 1982-only color and S/E-only color. The whole interior is the same rare color. After doing some number crunching, we estimate thay they made about 200 of them in this color! The only other place I have ever seen one of the same color is in the movie "Falling Down", in the traffic jam scene.
