vette experts? question

i know its not thirdgen related but please dont close until i get some response. I have in person seen and observed a zr-1 convertable (dark green, beautiful car) but ive read gm didnt make zr1 droptops, is this true and was this an aftermarket job or were there maybe a few produced? Any help? Please dont lock

I heard there were a few made and that GM sent them to the UK to be crushed. I've also heard that there is 1 left that was crushed but not destroyed and the guy is trying to sell it for like $100K. This is all hear-say though. I'm sure some vette guys can elaborate....

did you see a true LT5 under the hood?

or just a ZR1 emblem on the rear bumper?

if you saw just the ZR1 emblem on the rear bumper its likely the owner is an idiot and does not know how sacreligious it is to do that (place a ZR1 emblem on a L98/LT1 vette)

In the VIN, the fifth digit would be a "z" for zr1 and "y" for all others. For convertibles, the 6th digit would be a "3".

so if you look at the so called zr-1 convertible, it should read something like this:

"1G1YZ32J________"

According to all of my vette books, I have never heard of a zr1 convertible.

There were a handful zr1 coupes made in 89 but none were sold in public.

Check the VIN and let us know!!!

Hello,

No ZR1 Corvette convertibles were made by Chevrolet nor any approved third party vender. I have seen at least one that was in a Corvette magazine some years back that was a custom job. The guy had a shop make his coupe a convertible conversion using all factory convertible pieces. It looked very assembly line correct.

As for the UK crushing story mentioned above. GM had a bunch of 1989 prototypes for testing over there. They were taken to a yard and were supposed to be crushed. At least a couple were left partially squashed sitting in the yard. A guy heard about them and bought one or more. Then he bought a 1989 that was made in the same time frame as the 1989 ZR1 prototype and transferred over all the body panels and other needed parts to replace the squashed parts. Now he had a running driving correct ZR1 protoype! Again, it was in a Corvette magazine several years back. I believe he was offering to sell it for a million bucks.

Well they made at least 1. This is a 1990 hardtop convertible ZR1. Was originally a gm exec. car and now is in the national corvette museum. As for a zr1 vert being available to the public? No way....Probably just some dude slapped the badge on there.

Edit : Pic didn't work, too big. Give me a minute.
