Correct striping on 85 IROC?
Correct striping on 85 IROC?
G'day...I have an 85 IROC in black, it has red badging around the car and the door "IROC-Z" decal is red also.
The question I have is what stripes should it have? Is it just one small red stripe or red / silver??
It currently has a 2 1/2 in red stripe on it that ain't factory and I'd like to put it back to what its meant to have.
Cheers in advance.

It should have a red and black stripe, with the red on top.
I should add this is assuming that black is the original color and the interior is red.

Roger that....one question though, why have a black stripe on a black car?
Edit: Its black on the outside and grey interior. Maybe the red decals etc were changed later on?

Simple. GM was/is too cheap to create one "set" of stripes that would be used on only one color combination car!! It's also the same on 1985-87 Z28 striping. Although these are four-colored (three hues of a specific color and black), they were also used on black Z28's. The bottom color (black) could not be seen, just as on your car.

....I've not seen any other black 85 Iroc with red decals and badges....Is mine wierd?
I wouldn't call it weird. Personally, I like the combo a lot.
Here's some more history. The red/black striping and red IROC-Z door decals were used in 1985 on two exterior colors, black and silver. These combinations were discontinued for 1986 as red was no longer used. It came back in 1988 where it was used on black and for the first time, white IROC-Z's (no silver as it was discontinued in 1986).

I always thought that if you had grey interior you got silver strips, decals, and emblems. If you have red interior then you got red stripes, decals, and emblems. But I am not sure about this

Generally speaking, this is true. But there were "optional" striping colors on select interior / exterior combinations. Hypothetically, if you ordered a black 1986 IROC-Z with a black interior, did you get silver or gold graphics? One of the two had to be the default and I would imagine the other color if specified on the order, was available. I do not have GM's color combination chart for 1986, so I'm not sure of this. It just makes sense though.
Also, how about a white 1986 IROC-Z with a red interior? Red graphics were not available in '86, so what was the accent color? Probably silver. Maybe gold was an "option"??
What you will NEVER see from the factory was a tan interior car with silver exterior striping / graphics or a gray interior car with gold striping....
