What kind of differential is this??

I pulled this differential out of my 89 camaro. It has rear disk rotors and supposably has 323 gears. The papers for my car says the rear is from a 90 z28 but its not a 10 bolt? It's an 8-bolt??? Im really confused. Its supposed to be a POSI, and I think it is.

I need a new differential, any good places where I can find a direct replacement for this?

The number of bolts references the cover of the rear end and not the ring/carrier bolts. From the look of that center section, you probably have the 9-bolt Borg Warner rear end.

As far as finding parts, aside from used you're pretty much outta luck. I'd suggest finding a 10 bolt in the junkyard to work with instead.

I've got a good 2.77 9 bolt, and a blown up 3.45 9 bolt, all I want to do is switch the gears, but since the gears are damaged, I'm basically screwed.

There is a place that specializes if Borq Warner 9-bolts. You can get anything you need for it here:

http://www.diffsolutions.com/

A little bit more expensive than the 10-bolt parts, but if you already have the axle, then this may be the way to go.

You're in luck if you want to go this route....

I used to race in the IMSA Firestone Firehawk race series from 1986-91 and happen to still have 7 of these differential units - all brand new and still sealed in box from GM. Send me an e-mail if you're interested in one.

is it possible to take the rear axle comepletely off just using jackstands, or do you have to raise it really high

I've done it with only jackstands. It's not too bad. Put a floor jack under the center of the axle and disconnect everything but the lower control arms. Then lower the jack and unbolt the control arms. You can then just pull the whole axle out by the jack. You will need a friend to help balance the axle on the jack, but overall, it's not that hard.
