I am just wondering how rare a L69 V8 was on a 83 Trans Am? Some people have told me that its rare and I just want to know if this is true.

Production was in the high hundreds, 700 some odd IIRC. So it's fairly rare.

There were about 10 times that many 84 L69 TAs.

They did not come from the factory that way; but some of them got it installed afterwards under a "campaign", to cure some sort of fuel starvation issue.

Mine does not have it for example, and has served me well for 18 years and close to 300,000 miles so far. But who knows, as young as it is, I could start having problems with it at any moment. I wonder if the dealer would still honor the "campaign".....

hey fellas - i've spent a lot of time on the TBI boards, but never in this areana, so i have a question. I have a 1984 Z-28 parts car that had a 5 speed and "H.O" 305 (had the dual snorkel cleaner). Is there a chance this motor might be of any use? I keep reading about an L69 I think(?).

I'm not planning on it - but is there a number I can check on the block or heads? I suspect it may have been rebuilt since its painted chevy orange.

L69 is the option code for the HO 305 engine... they are one in the same.

well, i'm quite nearly convinced it was an L69 car - it had EVERY option i've ever seen on a camaro/firebird (big headliner console, t-tops, power EVERYTHING, adjustable seats, 5-speed, factory lit rear lisence plate panel. ect.

What's a factory lit rear license panel look like? I know they had an aftermarket deal that went straight across the back on Camaros and it relocated the rear license plates, but I didn't know they had one from the factory!

i dunno, it looked very similar to the stock piece (the tray that folds down) but there was a black plastic skirt that bolted up with the plate that had lights in it (if I remember right).

Ty

PS - I'm certain it was stock.

I understand the L69 may have been fairly rare in the 3rd gen's, but honestly, the engine itself isn't worth much, unless you're going to restore the car numbers matching....

EVERY Monte Carlo SS from 83-88 had the EXACT same L69 305 engine....

Same cam, heads, intake, exhaust ( up to the converter ) etc.

So if you're looking for a L69 there are plenty out there.

I'm not downing 'em... they ran very good for what they are / were....especially when they came out in '83, since it was the performance dark ages...
