Decal placement question.
Decal placement question.
Allright, I know that the guys at the plant were known to place decals such as the B-pillar birds and the Formula 350 door decals in different spots on some cars, I guess depending on the mood they were in. I am currently looking at a '90 Formula 350, rare yes, 17K miles to boot. I will call the guy tomorrow, bc so far all I've seen are pics. In the pic the door decals are all the way at the bottom of the door, I mean way down almost to the rocker panel. The car looks like it has 17k on it, so I don't understand why the decals would have been redone.
Has anyone actually seen these decals that far down on the doors on an "Original" car? My '89 has them right where most cars I've seen have them, and the first time I saw this '90 it threw me off. If any of the "well-documented" guys here can tell me anything about this I would appreciate it. Car looks great, Bright Red, hardtop, Med Dark Gray, just those damn decals bother me.
Thanks
Mark

Use Aircraft Remover, available at any parts store. It dissolves the clearcoat right down to the bare metal without the possibility of scratching the metal. It also cleans up with water. Then polish them to whaever luster you prefer and you can have them reclearcoated. If you have no curb rash or other wheel damage then you will have brand-new looking wheels. I am doing a set of Formula wheels right now and I can tell you, it is quite a bit of work.

Here are some tips for the decals on Formulas
Typically speaking the Door decal was located about just below half way between the Door bumper edge, and the lower rocker highlight. This is not to say that they would vary, I do not think they used a complecated method of putting the decals on, I think it was more of stick it on and move to the next one.
IF the decal is resting on the lower highlight line I would be surprised if it was "original" but I did not see every car come off the line, I saw NONE of them exit the factory for that matter.
IF you purchase ORIGINAL GM Formula Decals you will notice that there is location marks indicated only by the extra masking tape that would indicate the distance from the front of the door. There is NO vertical alignment marks.
On a side note: I have noticed on some "Original" looking cars where the nose bird was very off center, and an owner could not have gotten it that far off unless they stood 20' back and threw it at the car. I just do not think there was a jig used to line it up perfectly every time.
IF it has the Highlight line/stripe going around the bottom of the car, then the "Formula" Should be slightly above that stripe. IF there is no extra stripes, then this picture appears to be a typical location:
