My car

Ok well I have had my car for over a year now and just turned 16. I have yet to see a car around here(wichita, ks) and some other places i've visited, that is exactly the same body style as mine. I have a 1989 Camaro RS. It has t-tops and all electric, a 2.8l V6 and the brake light is in the spoiler. It also has I-roc rims. SO i was wondering if something has been done to the car because every car i've seen has had the brake light in a different position or has the different style tail light with the 3 or 4 lines through them while mine only has 1 line through them. Also what's up with different camaros with the single line through the tail lights, i've noticed some have the black strip while others don't and still some others that have the stripe on one side but not the other. so ya any answered would be nice thx.

It's a regular 89 RS that someone added IROC rims to, other than that your car is all correct for its year and model. They made LOTS of them. Check out our Tech Data on the main page of TGO and a post on the FAQ Board about telling Camaros and Firebirds apart. In 85 they used the 1 stripe taillights on the lower models and the grid style on the high models. 87-90s had the brake light in the spoiler.

I wish people who tell others specifics about our cars would use the technically correct terminology. "IROC" refers to the racing series. "IROC-Z" refers to the car, nothing more, nothing less.

Yes, the 1989 RS is a very common car.

I would never be so bold to call Sport Coupe/RS's "lower models". This can be interpreted differently by different people. As a matter of fact, the Berlinetta used a "one stripe taillight" and it cannot be called a "lower model". It's base price in 1984-86 was to the dollar, identical to the Z28. In the future, please refer to them by their proper names.

The one stripe lamp design with no black line was used on the 1982 - 85 Sport Coupe. The same lamp with a painted black line was used on 1982 - 1984 Z28's, 1986 - 87 Sport Coupes and 1987 - 89 RS's. Add a gold colored applique in the stripe area and you've got a 1982 - 1986 Berlinetta. Note: The berlinetta had a double gold stripe from 1982 - 83 and a single stripe from 1984 - 86.

The grid or "checked" lamps were used on all Z28's from 1985 - 87, 1991 - 92, IROC-Z's from 1988 - 1990 and on RS's from 1990 - 92. Note I do not list the 1985 - 87 IROC-Z. That's because it was an option package on the Z28 and not a model in itself, like it became in 1988.

Correction.

The 90 RS had the same taillight setup as the 87-89.

I stand corrected. Keep forgetting about RS's. But not bad considering all my info is from memory.

Lets not get too technical here. I think calling the car an IROC is fine because it's is just a quick way of saying IROC-Z or IROC-Z28, especially if you're just talking about the rims. Most companies that make them now call them IROC rims too. If you wanna get that technical I could complain that you never call the car an IROC-Z28, it's full name. See where this is going??

They are lower models. The Z28 and IROC-Z are the Third Gen's top models. The only reason the base price is the same is because of all the extra nonsense that Berlinettas were loaded with, but they were not the high performance cars. You could consider the Berlinetta a mid model and Sport Coupe the low model. But they are both lower in the lineup than a Z28 or IROC-Z28.

You should run your RPO codes on the RPO decoder from the main page, to see all of the options that you have.

Car: 1984 Camaro Berlinetta
Engine: LT1
Transmission: T56 6-speed
Axle/Gears: 4.11 LS1 Rear End
Let's see - ( Factory Stock )

Berlinetta - Carpeted interior / Z28 - Plastic
Berlinetta - Sound deadner / Z - none
Berlinetta - Intermitant Wipers / Z - High & Low speed
Berlinetta - Custom cloth seats / Z - Base seats
Berlinetta - Timed courtesy lights / Z - looking for keys in the dark
Berlinetta - Auto headlights off / Z - Dead battery
Berlinetta - Flash to pass HB / Z - NO flash to pass
Berlinetta - Vol reduction radio / Z - blown ear drums @ start-up
Berlinetta - Roof console and hatch cover / Z - nope

I could go on, but you see the point I'm making. Everything that made a base model Z "Better" in many peoples eyes ( suspension, wheels, ground effects ect..) can simply be bolted to a Berlinetta. The same is not true in reverse. I can't tell you how many Berlinetta parts I have sold to Z28 owners while they are UPGRADING thier cars.

Just becasue the Z28 had a stiffer suspension does NOT make it a better car !!

REvival of an old post for a simple comment?

Actually I have an SC with the cover over the rear area. It seemed rather common on the 82-86 Cars, Camaros especially.

I have a collection of them, I think I have like 3 or 4 of them. And none of them came from Berlinettas if I remember right.

I love 3rd gen cars, I like all the info and oppinons. You say they are sports coupes and they have the compartment cover? Thats a new one. What years are they? and why do you have so many?
You are a lucky person.

You know I found a complete FireBird Formula 5-Speed TPI in a local Boneyard a few months ago !! The Guy wanted $400 for the rear end ALONE !?!?!?!?

It was a BW 3.45,.......... But DAMN !!!!!!

It's a 20 YO Rear that is almost SURE to need a rebuild.... It even had the IRON calipers - not the PBR set-up ! I Laughed at the guy and told him I spend $250 on my 1999 LS1 POSI and he would have to shred the thing before anyone gave him $400 for it !! ( Besides - I've already got a spare 3.45 in my garage !! )

I'll forever be a ThirdGen fan !!!!!
