all late 87+ cars equipped with the rear SPOILER got them.
if you look at the lense, it even says DOT 87 on it.
intresting side fact... before GM made their own lense, the 87 convertibles had a ford truck 3rd brake light mounted in it.

86 top of hatch (outside)
87-90 in spoiler (camaro), or under spoiler (firebird)
91-92 Top of hatch (inside)
the DOT and the year seems to be the first year a lens was introduced.

Almost 100 percent correct. The lamp was manufactured by Ford. The "Ford" logo was then sanded flat by ASC and used on the convertibles. This lamp is not bolted to the spoiler, but onto a bracket that bolts to the lid underneath the spoiler. In essence, it "floats". This lamp was used on the Ford Country Squire station wagon.

As for a similar topic, and I hope it does not go much past this, but my 67 Buick Riv has the exact same trunk lock mechanism bolt pattern as a 74 Ford Thunderbird.
Go fig.
I imagine there are more parts like that than we care to imagine.

Well, I guess that's one that ASC missed or didn't take the time to sand. I talked to Brian Jaros, who worked at ASC in the late 80s and he told me they sanded the logo off.

I have not researched this so I suppose it is possible. I do know conclusively that it was used on the station wagon. I've personally seen several.

All 88s have a spoiler. It might be the shorty spoiler or the regular, but they all had them in 88. Prior to 88, there were multiple model offerings for the Camaro (Belinetta, SC, Z28, LT, etc). Starting in 88, it was the IROC-Z or the Sport Coupe. Nothing else.

87 RS only in CA.
88, there was an RS, but it was only in California, Texas and one other place.
89-92 RS everywhere, no more SC.

In 88 all sport coupes got the full ground effect package and 15" five spoke wheels. The only difference between an 88 Sport Coupe and an 89 RS is the badging, and the fact that some 88s got a different rear spoiler.
