steering column

Ok, figured this would be my best shot. I need to replace my steering column in my '86 and I've been told that only certain year columns will be compatable with mine. What years are these. Thanks again.

as far as fitting, all years should be compatible, the only differences i can think of would be VATS,Airbag, and cruise etc

Not to jack the thread.. Just about any GM column should work?? I have taken mine apart once, and realize I would have to keep my cylinder lock. Should all the harness be a direct fit??

Only those from 84 to 88 will directly bolt and plug in. 89-92 have the VATS to contend with, and the 82 and 83 have different wiring for the windshield wipers which can be changed to work but is a minor PITA.
The only real thing to watch for is the cruise and wiper controls - you need a delay switch to operate a delay motor...cruise should be obvious

no if youre installing it into a non-equipped vats car, then u just leave it unplugged, wont effect the operation of the car, and if your are installing it into a vats equipped car, then u splice the vats wires from the new column to the old wires on the old column

Hey guys, thanks for all the helpful info. I actually got one out of an 84 bird. Everything was great except, the bird had delay wipers and no cruise where as i have non-delay wiper and cruise, switched my switch out of my old column into the other one, now my high wipers are a click below what it reads, but that a minor insignificance for now. I hooked my cruise back up, but that doesn't work yet either, I guess its just something to work on. Also, the whole reason I put the column in in the first place was to get my blinkers to work. Long story, but I changed to an aftermarket shifter, which ended up breaking the pewter piece in the column cause my lock cable wasn't hooked up correctly. Anyways, everytime I clicked my blinker a blew a fuse. Now, it worked fine until after I started the car. Then I blew a fuse again. So I put a 30 amp in instead of the 20 amp, is this safe? Thanks again. Gilley

Um, no. You need to find out why the fuse kept blowing, and fix that problem. The only thing that the higher rated fuse will do, is allow more power to flow through the wire before it blows again; this could cause the wire to heat up enough that it will melt the insulation off of it, and cause a short-circuit that could result in a fire.
