technically Pontiac never offered the GTA or Formula as a convertible. Only the Trans Am and the Firebird, and only mid-year in 1991 until the end of the thirdgen run.

That said, ASC did convert GTA's and Formula's, they're out there, they're just not official.

I think was only in 88/89 that they did GTA/Formy conversions, in 91/92 it was only TA/Base

Not quite. I have an '87 GTA that was converted by ASC. I have owned it since day one, so I know this to be fact.

I saw a 92 Formula convertable for sale at Legendary Motorcars once, I'm pretty sure they only deal in authentic cars.

Pontiac produced no factory GTA or Formula convertibles for any year 1987-1992. The only models "factory offered" in 1991 and 1992 were the base Firebird and the Trans Am.

Pontiac facilitated the ASC convertible program in 1989 by offering drop shipment of new cars to ASC facilities for conversion.

Yes, the only 3rd gen converts available in 87-89 were done by ASC. I have an 88 Formula convertible, 1 of 104 made, that is 4 sale @ www.autotrader.com.

These cars are Rare, as you can see on the street. Unlike the sister Camaro, Formula/ Trans Am Firebird converts are not a dime a dozen and when you find a good one, grab on to it.

I think what's being said is that although Pontiac didn't "officially " offer a convertible Formy or GTA, ASC did many after the fact conversions on these models.... perhaps sent in by the dealerships for conversion.

Me too.

There arent many exceptions to the 'rule' but then again... what are the rules?

I dont care all that much, I love driving the car, I could care less how 'rare' or 'factory' or 'un-factory' it is. 350+droptop=fun.

Doesn't really matter if PMD sent it or a dealer sent it, technically there is no RPO code for the 87-89 GTA/Formys, etc that were made by ASC in those years. The later years, although converted by ASC still, had an RPO code.

Course, could be mistaken about the RPO code on the later ones, too.

That's right. I wish there was something official.

For what it's worth I have a 92 Formula 350 w/ttops & I ordered all the documents from PHS. They have this production info for the 92's.

24364-Base
1325-Conv.

1052-Formulas
0-conv.

508-GTA's
0-conv.

1643-TA's
777-conv .

Total Production--29,669

Again, I'm not an expert & this doesn't include ASC's and whether they are "factory" or not, just my .02
