I was thinking about the differences between my wife's 1990 IROC and my '87 IROC today and it was really wierd, thinking how many more options my IROC has then hers.... Most of them aren't that big, especially to her, but when you look at the two, mine looking like a hoopty, its wierd to think:

My car is virtually LOADED for an '87 minus the leather seats and a 350. It has:

Power windows
" door locks
" hatch with pulldown
" mirrors
145mph speedo
4 wheel disc
overhead console
t-tops
power dimming mirror with map lights

While my wifes, newer and more comfortable IROC didn't have any of those features aside from power doors and windows.

Its just interesting to see how differently optioned some cars are.

not important to me, i'm deleting options from my Formula making it as light as possible it's an autocross/road race car mostly, the Iroc on the the other hand has every option minus the 350/auto(link in sig).
one of my favorite thirdgens i owned was my 84 bird it had 0 options except t-tops and F41.14" wheels, no power anything,no defrost, no gauges,no a/c, no tilt, no cruise, no rear spoiler (i put one on) no trip odometer even, 2.8 V6 5 speed manual.

Dante,

Some of the options you have on your 87 weren't even available in 1990. The roof console and the auto-dim mirror.

I have an 87 like yours 305, auto, G92. Except i have option level 2 instead of 3, so I don't have the roof console, power mirrors, or power seat. I do have leather, and a power antenna (which works).

I think options are basically a couple things, #1, what is the car being used for, if your going to autocross or race the car then less options are better. If you want a luxury cruiser then more options.

I personally like the best of both worlds (I am confused) I like going fast, cornering hard, but having all the creature comforts, If I removed all my goodies it would perform better, but I grew up with loaded out Buick daily drivers, where creature comforts have become necessity.

I had a loaded Formula, except the up end radio:
I added
10 disk changer, Sub woofer etc
Floor mats
Self dimming mirror
overhead console
"Ultima" articulating seats & leather
I converted it to TPI
3.73 rear gear
subframe connectors
Baer Brakes
Wonderbar

So I just enjoy it...

I have the power antenna too but unfotunately it doesnt work at all. I think them I finally do tear the car down I'll just put in a fixed antenna or hide it under the dash.

I guess I should have titled the thread differently. I was just saying I never realized I had so many options until I compared the 87 to the 1990.

My car feels like a hoopty right now and its wierd to think that it was a very highly optioned car in its day.

My '82 is fully optioned even has power antenna. My '83 on the other hand has no options except for WS6.

I have passed on many nice cars because they did not have the options I wanted.

When I look at a car I try and imagine it as I would have ordered the car when it was new.
I want a car w/ WS6, rear disks, and basically all the performance options. T-tops dont hurt either.

When I look for a car, I look for the one that has all the performance options and nothing else. This makes finding a car very hard and it took me awhile to find the one I have. 88 IROC hardtop, no A/C (no RPO C60), no power options but of course it has the G92 package..it also has DX3 decal and stripe delete although I wasn't necessarily looking for that. I've got another car lined up and it's a 91 Z28 1LE...it's totally unoptioned except for the performance one's Im looking for; I should be picking it up in a week or so.

Thats why I mentioned that it still works. I ran into a guy from Minneapolis, his car only has 22k on it. His power antenna doesn't work either. Thats about half the miles I have on mine. I feel lucky! knock on wood.

P.S. His power hatch is fried too, mine works fine.

I also love options, hard cornering, and crazy acceleration.

My Trans Am came optioned with the digital dash. Only Trans Am I've seen with the digital dash....mostly I've seen them in GTA's. I also have the power antenna (stuck in the up position) and TTops.

I am adding:
Factory Performance Sound
Overhead Console
AC Delete
Power Dimming Mirror
Split Folding Rear Seats w/ Headrests
Deluxe Rear Cargo Trim
All GTA exlusive items
-I'm probably leaving off some....

I had a set of the breakaway mirrors that I was considering putting on since they would be correct for my year and unique,....but I decided against it and sold them...

I really don't care.

As long as it has 2 doors and 4 wheels....

Seriously though, its hard enough finding the right car. The colour you like, the drivetrain, the conditon.....ect.

If I manage to find all that, I won't sweat the small stuff.

i have an absolute base model bird. i have added
4th gen console
1/2 way added trunk release (waiting on a delivery to finish)

am going to add power windows. probably just on the passenger side since thats the side i can't reach.

i also removed the cruise control since it did not work.

I was just looking for an IROC-Z period - the fact that mine has the L98 option just sweetened the deal.

It's nearly optioned-out from what I can tell, although it doesn't have G92; unfortunately, I found this board after I found the car so I didn't even know that I should've been looking for particular options. I just knew that I wanted an IROC-Z :werd:

I have the power antennae and mine still works! The hatch pulldown does too. What's amazing is that the overhead console flashlight still works if I put a battery in it.

Options, not all options, but the ones I want are very important to me. First, it's gotta be brand new. And because I'm way fussy about what I want, if I'm plunking down the $$$ for a new car, I want it exactly like I want it, period--no ifs, ands, or buts about it. I'm not there to "deal" with the dealer for a deal.

I start with the highest performing engine I can get with a manual transmission. That might not be a problem on a lot today, but it sure was with thirdgens. Then I add ALL the performance options that are available, which also aren't always easy to find on the lot. Then I add the best sound system available and nicest interior material. After that, gizmos and gadgets don't matter, not AC either. However, power windows are important because it sucks to try to reach over to roll down the passenger window while you're driving. And I've never ordered the power antenna for just the reasons you've all mentioned. The fixed-mast works fine for me.

I want the exterior solid black(no two-tones, decals, graphics or stripes) and my interior similarly coordinated. That car's not likely to be on a lot, so then I place my order, lol.

For similar reasons, I could never own someone's used car. However, restoring a car is different. It would be for the "project" of it. And at least when it's finished, I'd feel like it's mine from the ground up, like a new car again.

When I was looking for a Camaro, the only options that were important to me were:

- Z28 (or IROC)
- T-tops
- Manual Trans.

Other than that, I didn't care too much. I actually 'deleted' a few of my car's factory options, like AC.

OH YEAH! And t-tops. Thanks for reminding me Adam.

OMG! How could I have forgotten to mention those?! That was like the same importance to me as to Adam. I'm so ashamed.

I hadn't disrupted the history boards yet tonight, so I was had to pop in before bed. It's a good thing I did!

My 88 Iroc had the following:

No power seats/mirrors/windows/locks
305 TPI with the stock "hotter" cam
T5
AC
Foglights
Defrost
15" Z28 rims
115 speedo
hard top

My option codes are here: http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/474242/2

I have since changed most of that... but the guy bought it new as fast as he could get it with a T5 and AC lol

my car was loaded from the factory, and now it has even more options then it started with....

i might be the only vert here with a remote trunk release.. in the factory coupe location...
the tonnu cover button has been relocated to the cover like the 92 cars have...

i have a small LED embedded in the rearview mirror that dimly lights up the shifter area (and only the shifter area.. it makes a rectangle pattern).. i got the idea from a C5 my roomate had..

im probly going to add the dim/time light on feature to my interior lights, and i really want to put the auto down window feature on my car.

just stupid lil things that make it nicer to deal with... like okfoz, im confused... i want performance and comfort.

My car has every option an 87 tpi manual transmission car can have except rear window louvers and leather seating. Frankly, options are great, but as these things age things have a greater tendancy to stop working. In no particular order, I think the most useful options are:

AC
cruise
TPI
halogen headlights
tinted glass
limited slip
4 wheel power disks
performance axle ratio

I be just as happy with the car if it did not have:

split folding rear seat
custom cloth interior
deluxe luggage compartment trim
rear window defogger
locking rear storge compartment
engine oil cooler (only because I'm not sure it does much)
delco-bose stereo
power antenna
factory floor mats
intermittent wipers (because now only a fair-weather driver)
power windows (due to now-limited use of vehicle; it's just one more thing that could fail as it ages)
power seat
power hatch release
power hatch pulldown
automatic inside mirror
interior roof console
power locks

Some borderline items are:

Power outside mirrors
Tilt (I find that it's most often in the non-tilt position anyway)
body side mouldings
ttops (they are fun but I can see them as a problem if they start to leak, and also because they weaken the body)

I suggest anyone looking to get a 3rd gen consider the list above. In other words, don't let lack of options keep you from getting a particular car, especially if it's a decision between a clean optionless car or a not-as-clean well optioned car.

My two cents.

I forgot to add handling package as useful: Z28 or B4Z.

Also, B4Z may corner better, but it rides rougher, increases opporutnities to scrape the bottom or hit a parking curb, and makes tire rotation a pain.

I've never driven a Z28, but I'm guessing it can't handle much less compared to an IROC. (p.s. If anyone thinks/knows differently about handling between these two, let me know. I'm curious.)

I would love to have a tilt wheel

My seats are hard enough to get into.

The OH console looks like a useless option, dont miss that one
or power locks and mirrors, got the windows though.

Louvers have helped preserved the interior and I dig my HD Radiator and 108 amp alternator. Corvette size tires with WS6 is a plus. a 3:27 rear with a true posi is a nice compromise and cruise keeps it goin down the road. My Performance Sound has been replaced, It was the best sounding audio set up at the time and I would love to hear one someday.

There seem to be a bunch of high option 87 cars on here!

My car is a iroc level 3 w/ g92, so it has everything available except factory leather/bose and factory 5.7.

In reality it's alot of extra stuff to fix and maintain, although sure is nice to have at times. I was only looking for a clean third gen Z28 at the time, not even an iroc per se. I got LOTS of bonuses.

when I started looking for camaros I didnt know anything about them, except they looked cool.

I knew I wanted a v8, and it had to have T-tops (though now I might not have gone for them) AC good enough to keep me comfortable when the windows werent down. (glad I have a good AC now too, with all the damn cicadas around) I also wanted a 91-92 because I liked the GFX and interior better. If I had known better I wouldve definitally gotten a Z28 or an IROC though, kind of regret that to this day :-\ (though, it's hard as anything to find an IROC or a Z in any condition worth buying around here)

Looking at the window sticker from my former '83 Z28:

AO1 TINTED GLASS
BX5 ROOF DRIP MOLDINGS
B34 FRONT FLOOR CARPET MATS
B35 REAR FLOOR CARPET MATS
B84 BODY SIDE MOLDINGS
CD4 INTERMITTENT WINDSHIELD WPR SYS
C60 AIR CONDITIONING
G80 LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL
J65 POWER DISC FRONT & REAR BRAKES
LG4 5.0 LITER 4-BBL V8
MM5 FIVE-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION
N33 COMFORTILT STEERING WHEEL
QYH P215/65R-15 S/B RAD W/LTR
TR9 AUXILLARY LIGHTING
V08 HEAVY DUTY COOLING
YE4 EL TN AM/FM ST W/CASS,CLK,ERSS
Z28 CAMARO Z28 SPORT COUPE
17D FLL9 CHAR/OR CU W/CL L/S CR BK
75L RED

I ordered this car in September of '82 from Graff Chevrolet in Grand Prairie, TX, and didn't receive it until March 23, 1983 because of a material STOP on the Conteur Custom Cloth interior at Van Nuys. I didn't order any power options, which, unfortunately, included the LG4......

Nevertheless, I loved that car! I added the 140mph HD service parts speedometer (old P/N 25052189), a set of export headlight covers, and the '82 Pace Car windshield decal......the car looked just like the '83 Nelson Ledges showroom stock car that Chevy built and was featured in Goodyear magazine ads of the time.

That interior seems to be really rare.....we used to go check out the new Camaros at the dealerships every fall in the mid-80s, and I never saw more than five or six other cars from '83 to '85 that had it.....my best friend had an '84 L69 that had the blue Conteur interior, and that looked fantastic!

Wish I still had my '83.......with the drivetrain my '99 has!

I had the VIN CARFAXed, and it last changed owners in 1995 in Pearland, Texas.....
