350 w/manual
I would have to question Irocztwentygr8's info about 350's with a manual tranny. If you were talking about the Camaro with this combo, I would have to agree. As for the Firebird Formula, an option with the 350 with a 5-speed was available in 1987. My dad recently sold an 87 Formula with the 350, 5-speed. Numbers matched on the car, and we purchased it from the original owner. As for the torque problem, I hammered the car a bit, and the tranny held up just fine. We had the car apart, and everything (including the tranny) was stock appearing. The bell housing had red overspray from the factory. I dont believe this car is a fluke, but if anyone has compelling info about this topic, let me know.

UGH not again.
The bellhousing would not have "factory overspray". The car was not assembled then painted, rather painted then assembled making it impossible to get "factory overspray".

The only way to confirm your claim would be a copy of either your RPO sheet. Since you have already sold the car and If this is not available,. I would need your VIN to submit to GM and have them send me a copy of the Dealer/factory invoice.
As of right now it holds no water, but we would need proof, since there was NO EVIDENCE of such a car... Lemme Guess, it had T-tops too ???
On a more personal note Since I am the webmaster for 3rdgenformula.com it would be of interest for that site as well.

For goodness sakes... why is it, despite the fact this topic has been raised hundreds of times on the site (if not more than that) everyone continues thinking there were 350 cars with 5 speeds! People, give it up already... it never happened! Accept it!Either the owner was lying about the engine in the car, or he swapped in a 5 speed at some point. My money's on the first one....

I would have to agree there, Most Car owners are total idiots. They buy the car then dont look in to it.
Then they beleive that its 100% org. if they bought it from another owner.
8Firebird8 if your dad still has a copy somewhere where it shows the VIN post it. Most likely the car is a 305 car.

"red overspray" Sorry, but I gotta call
here because GM hasn't painted an engine red since 1977.

I'd wager that the car was a 305 TPI/5sp. A lot of people get the term "Small Block Chevy" and "350 Chevy" all mixed up in their heads. Since there is no external visual way to tell a 305 from a 350 without checking the code people just assume. I can tell you this though, original owners do all kinds of crazy **** to their cars. Just because it was purchased from the original owner doesn't mean that it couldn't have been a swap job. Even "little old men" can do some pretty serious things to a car. If you can find the VIN, or the RPO sheet, that would shut all of us ney-sayers up.

LoL! I have heard that one a few times before. Didn't you know ALL thirdgens with v8's were three-fitties?
Honestly 9 out of 10 sellers who say it's a 350 car really have a 305 car. There is no concrete way to tell looking at them, everyone wants a 350 car, and nobody really is excited about buying a 305 car so they BS it up to sell the car.

I can't beleive how many people think just cause they got a 3rd gen, that it has the exact same engine as a Corvette... too bad GM never made 5 speeds with 350s.... that would have been even more fun... but alas they didn't

305 vs 350. Dyslexia comes in handy when your trying to sell a car...
I think rather than badgering the guy, we should wait and see what he comes up with to show what he had.

Werd. My offer stands, if someone provides a legit picture of 5 speed/350 RPO ticket I will post back a pic of me chowing down on my shoes. Sounds fair. Until then, this stays in the same file as the 82' IROC.
On another note, congrats on 1st place at the t/a nats, how many toothpicks did you go through anyways?!?

GM does NOT spend thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars to emissions certify a "unique" engine / drivetrain combination. The 350 / 4+3 powertrain in the Corvette certified for 1987 would have to be certified again in the F-body if they would have offered it (they didn't.) LG4 + 200-4R in an 87 Monte Carlo is certified different than an LG4 + 700-R4 in an 87 Camaro, even if they have the same rear gears.
You're the one that needs to provide compelling info about the topic.

excuse me thats my stapler ...um ..um...ill light the place on fire.....
I had an uncle, who was a mechanic, had an L69 car. It was fast, no doubt. And after all the years of the horrible 170hp 350's, it was easy to believe that it was a 350. Knowing now that it could not have been, is kinda funny. I brought it up one time, and he said "I know mine was, it was factory ordered that way." When I told him that the car salesman lied, and that it had to have been a 305, he swore that it wasnt. Some people will never give up. Just like in the used car game. Every 305 is a 350. Every engine and tranny was magically rebuilt about 30K ago. This car is obviously not real, lets just leave it at that. I mean, surely everyone has noticed that the original poster is no longer saying anything about it?
