confused first timer
Hi all,
As the title explains i am new to the world of camaro's and am looking for some information.
I live in the UK and have been given a 1983 Z28 Camaro I-ROC by my dad as a present
. MY question is this. he said that its a 5.7 litre iroc model but all the information that i read states that the 5.7 engine was not available on that year, I'm confused!. He also said that it has never had a transplant engine.
Any information will be gratefully recieved. Many thanks

OK...Welcome...
The IROC was introduced in 1985.
You have a 1983 Z-28.
The 350/5.7 was introduced in 1987.
1983 Z28's came with 305's.
The available motors are all 5.0's:
305 (LG4) 4 barrel carb. (H code)
305 (L69) 305 H.O. (G code)
305 (LU5) Cross-Fire TBI injection. (I forget the code
)
TO find out which engine you have look at the 8th digit of your vin #. (H,or G, etc...)

thanks for the information mate.
My dad must be wrong about it having an engine transplant, as the reg docs state that it is a 5.7 engine. Is it a transplant that could have happened i.e would the engine fit.
Also does anyone have any performance figures for the 5.7 iroc car. 0-60. 1/4 mile. and bhp. thanks for the help
Top site by the way

Just an FYI, you cannot tell the difference between a 305 and a 350 just by looking at them.
They look identical (and just like any other Small Block Chevy, 283-406 CI).
The only way to be certain is to look at the casting numbers on the back of the engine block.

VIN is on the lower driver's side windscreen, as Mick Jagger would say.
Yep, I have a 350 and could tell due to the speedo and the VIN checked out

Almost sounds like a 305 Crossfire injection. Do they sit one behind the other, or sort of at an angle across from each other? Also, the number that Okfoz was talking about, if you look through the lower driver side of the windshield, you will see the VIN that will tell alot about the car.

Hmm, I don't happen to have non-US VIN decoding info!
If it has 2 throttle bodies, it is either a Cross Fire injection motor (which is fuel injected, not carb), or it does have some sort of transplant done, either engine or an old dual carb intake (which is rare if I remember right!)
Crossfire:
Dual carbs:

I'm from the UK, whereabouts are you?
Ity's a commin mistake for Camaro's in the UK to be registered as having a 350 engine when it is in fact a 305, there have been a few disappointed buyers. But if it has had an engine transplant then maybe.
There is a BIG american car show on next weekend at the Billing Aquadrome in Kettering. I'd suggest going if you possibly can. There's a few third gen experts and hundreds (in fact probably thousands) of cars to see.

hi there focus nice to see a fellow uk resident. I'm in plymouth mate, wont be able to make the show but will hopefully be going to them all in a few months time,. Now that you've said that about the engine it makes sence. The only reason my old man said it was a 5.7 was because of the reg docs. i'm travelling to wales on friday to pick the car up. The car has been standing for 18 months and am therefor after info on what to do i.e remove engine to check all components, how big a job is that,. what would you all recommend to do given the fact its been standing for so long. thx for help

hi, and welcome to the forum.
another limey here, and something of a thordgen freak.
if the reg document says 5.7, its perfectly possible the engine was transplanted, because the document would have origionaly said 5000cc, also being an 83 its not going to be an iroc, but a could be a Z28, iroc-z cars became available in 85.
i sugest looking on www.aacint.com there are a lot of people in your area who would be able to help with any questions you may have.
in the meantime - regardless of what engine / tranny is in there, a camaro is an extremely fun car, and turn heads everywhere they go, so dont worry too much about the spec, enjoy the car.
you dont mention how old you are, but i have been driving yanks since i was 20 (now 26) and found greham sykes to be excelent for insuring yanks for younger drivers.
enjoy your car!

Speaking of Wales!
Ever heard of UFO, Waysted and/or Paul Chapman???
I'm a huge, massive UFO fan in America. Both Michael Schenker and Chapmen are massive underrated guitarists
Fin More is the famed vocalist of Waysted who have a new Back from The Dead CD out
Oddly enough, going by your moniker, I had to bring it up!
UFO supposedly will tour here in the summer, at least NEAR here
Bill
(the pic has Danny Vaughn of Tyketto, a good replacement for Fin, at the time)
