Anyone Know About Or Have Convertible Camaro

Bought an 89 RS convertible, wrecked by some punk kid. After spending the last 2 months restoring it, I don't know too much about it. How rare is it? I know its value is around 5 grand in the present condition with the title not all that clean. Never seen any Camaro the color this one is (dark silver with a black top). It is factory according to the VIN. If you want pics check out my site.

I'm a previous owner of a 1987 Black/Gold T/A GTA and up to this point have only been interested in the Pontiac side of the F-body.

If your talking about the Medium Gray metallic, 7,906 Camaros were painted this color in '89.( coupes and convertibles) the color code should be 87u or the WA # is 9536. 3,245 RS convertibles were built in '89. they're not really rare, but they are nice cars. Chris '87 Convertible 1 of 263

Hey Rob, do you have a posi in your car? Mine is one, but it has drum brakes in the rear. All the limited-slip f-bodies I've ever seen or worked on have had discs all around.

I agree with you on the looks, it does look much better without the buldging hatch, an looks great with the top down. But when the top is up, the blind spot is basically the entire back of the car.

You might want to double check your RPO codes, because a limited-slip was not even an option on RS's. G80 is the code. It was an option with drum brake rears on Z28's and mandatory with rear discs (Z28/IROC-Z only).

Note: Rear discs and limited-slip were optional on 1986 and earlier Sport Coupes.

Wille, limited slip was available on RS's in 1989, In '90 it became standard on the IROC and not available on the RS, but you had to take the L03 V-8 to order the G80 in 1989. Chris

Chris,

Thanks for the clarification. I didn't know you could get G80 in any Camaro (post 1986) other than a Z28/IROC-Z. I wonder why GM strayed for one year. Do you know?

I wasn't aware that was an option until I took the rear apart. The posi tag was missing so I assumed it was a one legger. I took it apart to find it was a limited slip. According to the codes, it is a factory posi. The RS package on the convertible seems more like the Iroc's as I also have leather and several other Iroc only options.

1988 and 1989 you could get the G80 in the base car as long as you took the L03 V-8, '87's were IROC's and Z28's only. Chris

I have nothing to add to the conversation, but I would like to congratulate you on saving an '89 RS from an idiot kid I only hope there are more people like you in the future that take abused 3rd gens, and give them a new lease on life!!

Some people laugh at me for "preserving" a 2.8 RS, but I know if anyone but me had it, it'd be run into the ground and end up in the boneyard (its perfect right now though!). I couldn't let that happen

Nice color by the way

The kid I saved it from is two years older than me. I turned 18 in october, but he had been beating on it since he turned 17. The car was in perfect shape when given to him, but had mistreated it. It still needs a new top and a major front and rear alignment, and I want to get the seats reupholstered in higher quality leather, but just a restore.

If you want to see how bad he messed up the car when I bought it, check out my webpage. I have pictures posted.

I have had an incident with the car. About two weeks ago, I blew my left front tire going around a right hand turn, the front hit the ground causing me to have no control through the turn and jumped the curb and hit a mailbox. Messed up my new fender and wrecked the paint on the bottom ground effect. Didn't do that much to it considering.

Willie, can you clarify this for me? My 85 IROC has 4 wheel disk but has a 3.42 open 10 bolt differential. Thanks.

Oh, by the way, I finally got an auto x-ray, so maybe in the spring I'll figure out how to make my damned car run!

My 89 came with a 2:73 non-posi, drum rear. She now has a 3:23 posi-disc courtesy of a wrecked 92Z28.

I also bought a 1989 RS convertible that had been abused. It was dark red with dark red interior. It is now dark yellow geen from the bonneville's with a light tan leather mr. mike's interior in it. The nose had all the paint cracked off, and the left side was wrecked lightly. I painted the car last winter and I will say, parts related to the convertible cars cost a bundle. I noticed in one of the pictures, the rear wing is missing. Last I knew, it is discontinued and scrap yards want a mint. I have seen $500-600. But the finished product was all worth it. I let the kid that used to own it see it, and he thought a bought a different car.Good luck on your project, and any question's you might have, email me
