stripes in '86

I have an 86 sport coupe, and it has the black and silver stripes around the car, where the two colors meet. I noticed on phoenixgraphix.com that they are identical to the strpes they sell for a 86 IROC. (The ones for a Z28 are totally diferent.)

My question: Are these stripes an option for the sport coupe, or did all IROCs and sport coupes in 86 get the same stripes?

sounds like someone put them on your car b4 you got it. the only sportcoupe that had striping like an iroc likely would have been the '88 sport coupe. it had factroy ground effects, though. the striping was the same that was on the 85-87 iroc.

Mike,

Here's the lowdown on Camaro Sport Coupe striping. From 1982 - 85, the SC was painted one color with no striping (plain Jane). In 1986, it received the silver/black striping as you mentioned with black painted lower panels -- where the ground effects would be mounted if it had them. This silver/black striping is identical to the 1982 - 84 Z28 striping. All Sport Coupes regardless of body color, got the silver/black striping and black painted lower panels with one exception. Black SC's were painted a dark gray but still had the silver/black striping.

This paint/striping scheme was an effort by Chevrolet to "upgrade" the Sport Coupe in 1986. It also received 15-inch wheels for the first time and the F41 sport suspension became standard (optional in previous years).

To continue, the 1988 Sport Coupe was unique in that it came with silver or gold rockers (the one and only year the SC received rockers) and the 1985 - 87 IROC-Z silver/black striping. This striping is not to be confused with the above mentioned Sport Coupe striping. The SC striping was about 2-inches wide (one-inch for each color). The IROC-Z striping is about 1-1/8 inch wide with the silver being only 1/4 inch wide and the black slightly less than one inch wide.

I can post pics if anyone needs visual proof.

One thing though: My sport coupe is red with silver lower panels. Check on my site. Considering how the paint looked when I bought it, and there was no signs of repainting, I'd say this is how the car left the dealer.

Mike,

I believe my information is correct. My 1986 Camaro dealership brochure states one exterior feature on the Sport Coupe is "Black lower body".

You can confirm this by calling GM Customer Service (800.222.1020) and ask for a free "Resto" pack. Have your VIN handy as they will confirm ownership before shipping it out. Within it, you will find a Color & Trim Selections chart which shows all available exterior colors with lower body accent colors and striping. If you would like a copy of one from 1987 to give you an idea what it looks like, e-mail me. Sorry, I do not have too much detail info for 1986.

Mine has the black and silver stripes w/ the black lower body. I need new stripes though b/c they are peeling off and look kinda shi++y.

Willie, I'm going to cry foul here too. My 86 SC is dark blue with the gray lower section. The headlight buckets and the 3 vents in the middle of the nose are gray as well. The car has never been painted. If I can find a spot where the rust hasn't overtaken the color and the stripe, I'll pop off a couple pics with the camera and post them.

Here's a picture I popped off today of my 86 Sport Coupe. Stock silver paint, and a stripe that is very different than an IROC stripe.

I can not guarantee 100% that this is stock since I'm not the original owner, but since I've been around a body shop my whole life, there aren't too many repaints that would ever fool me. This paint and stripe appears to be 100% original stock equipment.

Jim,

The striping on your '86 is as I described above. It is identical to the 1982 - 84 Z28 striping.

When I stated all 1986 Sport Coupes had black painted lower panels (except on black cars), I was going on memory. Therefore, I could be mistaken that some other colors came with gray. I do know from documentation I have that in 1987, red Sport Coupes had either black or gray lower panels and dark blue metallic had gray. Dark red metallic also came with gray only. I only wish I had documentation for 1986....

I mis-read your first post that I quoted here for the sake of clarity. I had thought that you said that the SC and the IROC had the same stripe. My bad

Direct quote from the "Sport Coupe" page on my '86 brochure

"The premise was sinmple. Build a performance Camaro at a sport coupe proce. And after some spirited discussions and intense engineering, impressive things began to happen. Camaro Sport Coupe was suddenly becoming something to be reckoned with. The first clue was the exterior. The engineers replaced the standard wheels and tires with P205/70R-14 radials mounted on Rally Wheels with trim. Next they blacked out the headlamp pockets, rockers and lower facias and added a sport stripe around the rocker pandels. Then they gave the car new base coat/clear coat paint (now standard on all Camaros) and added dual sport mirrors."

and later
"Goodyear Eagle Gt P215/65R-15 on 15" by 7" Rally wheels are standard with the 2.8 liter V6 and the available 5.0 liter V8 also"

so the 4-banger had the 14" wheels but still had the striping. (just to notice.) It never really says anything about other color combos. and it shows a red SC w/ black lower paint. My mother's '86 sport coupe was bright blue met. and it had the lower painted black as well. I don't see why other color combos wouldn't have been available; seeing as the all '86's exscept the IROC's were available in 12 colors.

Well, I just ran my RPO's and found out my car WAS PAINTED!!!
The car is supposed to be Hawaian Orchid on top, and BLACK on the bottom.
But, since I like the car with red on silver, that's how I'm going to paint it.

I saw an 86 SC the other day w/ red upper and gray/silver lower. Couldn't tell if it had been repainted or not, though, since I just passed it on the road.
