1st Post ... IS this a good deal ?

Hello all,

This is my first post on this board. I have always loved the way the 3rd gen. convertibles looked and am in the process of buying a 1992. I was hoping to get your opinion on whether this was a good buy. It is a red RS convertible, 5 spd (have had great difficulty with finding this), with the 305 TBI, 73K miles and in very good condition cosmetically and mechanically. I am flying to buy it and am driving it 1200 miles to get it home. Price is $6500.

I really wanted a Z28 with same options as above but obviously with the TPI and more horses, I have given up that long search and figured the above is 90% of what I want. Will I be disappointed? Just need confirmation as I can still change my mind. Since you are the experts, is this as good a deal and should I be exstatic with it?

Thanks in advance...Alex

Welcome Alex. I hope you find our site informative.

I cannot answer whether you'll be content with the RS ragtop, simply because you are the only one who can answer that question. If you feel you must have this car, then go for it. If there is any doubt in your mind whether you should buy it or not, DON'T!

When I was living in Houston, I flew to Ohio to buy my first third gen convertible, a red 1987 IROC-Z ragtop. I drove it home 1,300 miles, so I know how you feel about the trip you might make.

Although the pic below is not of my first convertible, it is of my second. Although I own a supercharged 1987 IROC-Z that runs 12-flat (not bad for a 305), my pride and joy is my current 1987 Z28 convertible with a 305 TPI and 5-speed.

This may be premature, but welcome to our little informal topless club!!

Jase,

Thanks for the advise, but the price is firm.

Willie,

I love that TPI 5-speed conv. of yours! I so wanted a 92' just like that. My guess is there were probably less than a 100 z28 5-speed convertibles produced in red in 1992. Frankly, I am a bit tired of looking for one. Yes, the RS will not be as much of a performer, but I think I just want a nice weekend cruiser and gotta have a 5-spd with the v-8 (even if it is detuned). Anyway, nothing will seem fast after my last vehicle (99' Ford Lightning - 12.92 1/4 mile @ 107). Thanks for the big welcome to the board, I am definetly leaning towards following through with the purchase.

Being another convertible owner (91RS L03 auto) I can see where you're coming from. There are only a few ways I can tolerate the extreme lack of performance from the L03. First, its a convertible, from a performance standpoint with a thirdgen fbody its about the last place anyone would want to start. Second I've got other thirdgens that have a lot more performance sitting in my other garages.

Think about what you need to be happy, and what you want.

BTW the price is fine as long as its in decent condition without horribly high miles.

If you want a z, get a z. You are only getting the car 90% of what you really want.

I wanted a 92 b4c but settled for 92 z28 fully loaded with 46k miles for $8k. I would have to pay at least $12k for a low mileage b4c. I searched high and low (ebay, autotrader, newspapers, friends) and finally found it.

Do not rush into it!! Make sure it is the camaro you want.

Hope this helps!!!

I send my welcome greetings as well. I say buy it. If later you want to add go-fast goodies to it or convert to TPI or a larger engine you can always do that. Just remember you will be saving some money on insurance (RS vs Z-28) each year that can go towards those goodies. At least it has a T5 and V8. This makes it easier to hop up and still be smog legal (if that is a concern). Good luck and happy topless motoring, Lon.

Thanks all for your responses, feedback and encouragement. I feel welcome already. Yes Lonsal, modifying it later has crossed my mind. I think I will be O.K. with it as is short term.

Sounds like a great car, and the price does seem reasonable. If you do modify the car, keep all the original parts...down the road if you want to sell it, you will definitely get more if the next owner can make it stock.

I replied to your other post on the same topic. I'd say it's worth it. Knowing the going prices in this State, I can say you'd be hard pressed to find one w/ that low of mileage in TX for that price. My friend bought is for $6000 w/ 100k miles.. and I wasn't joking before.. we've been ALL OVER HOUSTON.. and NEVER seen another 91-92 red RS Conv. w/ a Tan top.. one w/ a black top.. and a red 89 w/ a tan top. but that's it.. and we live in katy.. and have literally been EVERYWHERE.. humble, kingwood, the woodlands, pearland, sugarland, aleif, pasadena, clear lake, baytown, channel view.. the whole nine yards. if it's mechanically sound, go for it. I paid $5500 for my 92 RS coupe.. asking price was $6500... see what you can do w/ the price. If you get a K&N, and a full 3" exhaust.. like a dynomax(looks stock).. you could still have your originallity, and a little better performance. the stock shifter sucks horribly.. havne't gotten aournd to changing mine yet.. but I need too.

Anthony,

I am flying out Friday to get it. I haven't had any luck finding one locally either. This one is in Florida. I'll post a pic when I return (in about a week). Maybe we can meet up sometime since we are both in the Houston area.

Jason,

Thanks for the feedback, not sure if I will modify, I would prefer to leave it basically stock unless I just can't live with the performance (going to be a weekend cruiser mostly).

Buy it. That is relatively low mileage. Unless you spend a ton in mods, paint, etc. you will never lose money on that deal. These ragtops are about as low as they're ever going to go. Tell me what else you can buy for $6500 in a rear-drive, V8 ragtop. A mustang? I guess. Not for me.

go for it! you may miss out on this car and then find a Z28 auto and you won't like that. I wish my car was a stick they are so much fun even with the LO3's lower performance. You can always make it faster. plus if you ever found what you want a 100% than you could always sell it because it sounds like they are hard to find in Texas!

future mods:

Alex,
There's a couple of good guys in the houston area.. I haven't seen most of them in a long time(took almost a year-long hiatus from active thirdgen ownership.. after the untimely death of the Ragin'87.. may she rest in peace.) I'm game for getting together sometime.. shoot me an e-mail sometime.. I work a lot.. but I'm usually free nights.. or monday's.. moving in august for college.. but I'll be around for a while.

I have a registry of the 1254 1992 Z28 convertibles made (I've only found a few so far). Auto's out number 5spds 5 to 1 but Red is one of the more popular colors. Hold out for the Z28. You will get the modification bug and kick yourself later for getting the TBi. Trust me. I got my butt handed to me in my 89 RS convt 305TBi by a 302 Thunderturd! So I had to pull the motor and put an L98 in it. Then that took a header and the ZZ4 went in. I love my 305 TPI 5spd 92 Z28 though. Nice to drive a car with only 40K on the clock once and awhile. You can find decent 92 Z28's for about 7 or 8K. Just hit autotrader.com or classifieds2000.com I search them all the time.

Rob,

I am going to go ahead and get it. But I will continue looking for the 5-speed Z vert. If I find a red one like I want with low miles, I think I can always sell the RS at no loss. It will keep me over in the meantime and I can get get acquainted with the characteristics of a thirdgen. I have driven a couple, but never owned one.

Thanks...Alex

RED92,

Unless you are an all-out street race, 99% of the time a 305 TBI/5 speed will be perfectly fine. They have enough torque, and the 5 speed helps keep them lively and fun to drive. Before I bought my '97, I was considering trying to find your car in '91 or '92 form.

If you want a weekend cruiser, I'm sure you'll be more than pleased with it. Enjoy!

I got the greatest deal in the world from my coworker, his son who travels all over the world had recently decided to purchase a 2001 s-10 extreme, so this left a problem for him,as it would happen his place of residence would only permit two vehicles, his and his father's, so faced with this problem he had to give up one or the other, so I ended up with a 90' RS/t/tps,gfx, power and utter sweetness for how much???????........nada damn dime....did some mods and now she is supreme...oh yeah.

Well, after an 1800 mile road trip she is home. Car turned out to be in great shape, but with the usual requirements of a 9-10 year old car. Like many of you, I am a bit picky about the little things so I have already started going through it and I think in about $1,000 it will be in mint fully restored condition. Overall I am very pleased with this one. I will post some pictures in a couple of days. Thanks for your help everyone.

BTW, the previous owner removed the cats and ran 3" straight pipes with a dynomax muffler. This car sounds awesome and is a lot quicker than I expected, I guess the 5-speed helps too (raced a 300Z on the way home and got him by a car length on a 0-70 run - must not have been a turbo, but it did have the grapefruit mufflers). LOL, what a hoot!
