What is up with the lack of 5 spds

I have a G92 305 TPI IROC 5 spd that is a little messed up. I am not sure if it is repairable but i alooking for a car in which I can swap the TPI 305 and 5 spd into and I don't want to do an auto 5spd swap. But there are so few decent 5spd....5spd period compared to teh autos. What did people not know how to drive in the 80s or did they just not give a flying **** about street performace. Also is my car rare in any way....a G92 TPI 305 5spd, 87 IROC. Also does anyone know a good body shop around northern NJ

probably just didn't give a f#$k! that's like asking why people bought a 305 when they could have had a 350.

I love my auto, as far as street performance, there isn't anyway you can shift better than a well built auto. the "only" advantage of a stick is it gives you more driver input allowing you to hold out to different rpm's which can be fun "once" in a while. everyone has different opinions.

I don't know why people get so fired up about their favorite transmission type. Both types are fun to drive and have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Anyway, like I told you in another post, you already have a complete 5-speed car. What's the difference? You're gonna swap the engine/trans anyway, what's the difference if the receiving car was an auto or 5-speed? It's gonna be exactly the same both ways...

People get fired up because not all of us find both "fun to drive". I hate every second of driving my IROC. The slushbox sucks. As far as I'm concerned, using an automatic is 1 step away from taking the bus. I want my drive to be an interactive experience, and the stick provides that. I like the control it gives. I can keep it in gear when I want to (Ever have an auto shift while you're flying through a corner? Not fun), downshift when I want (makes passing safer) and basically do everything else when I want. It pretty much allows me to control the car better, especially in relation to handling.

I never knew how much fun a stick was until I started selling cars a year ago. Now, whenever I have the chance, I always use a stick-equipped car to run errands, go to lunch etc versus an auto. When I first got my Z, I had been adamant about getting a stick (which is EASY to find in a 4th gen), then thought I might not like it after I bought it. I ended up loving it. Now I'd rather buy a 305/5 speed IROC instead of a 350/auto...if I can find one I want for the right price, which is hard to do when still paying for tuition

I know lots of people that drive stick and lots that don't the ones that drive autos in general are worse drivers (of the people I know, not referring to people I don't) and they seem to enjoy driving a lot less. One of my friends got the chance to drive her step mother's Miata and then I gave her a good 30 min lesson in my car (previous car, NOT THE 'BIRD!) and that clenched the deal, she loves stick now (no bad jokes please) and enjoys driving MUCH more than she used to... I guess it's all about who you are, but I have made one convert and I will continue my crusade.

I can't wait till I can do my 5 speed swap. The only thing I like about my auto is when I'm really tired I don't have to deal with shifting. But, I like driving my 280ZX a lot better because it has a 5 speed. I'm glad I'm going to the junkyard today, maybe I can start buying parts to swap.
