vin # trace
Does anyone know or have access to trace a vin # to locate the cars current location.
I bought a black 88 GTA in 88 with very low miles in Indiana and brought it to Georgia in 89, I then traded it on an 94 Toyota pickup in 97.
Now I still have the vin # and would like to see if the current owner would be interested in selling it back depending on the condition.
I tried carfax and consumerguide and found out the car is still located in the same county as me but has not been registered in about 4 years, they will not tell me anything else.
The vin # is 1G2FW2186JL214374
Thanks in advance

I tried the local DMV and all the information they can provide is the last time it was registered was 4 years ago in Catoosa County.
Anybody have any ideas on tracking down the car?
Thanks

If a car isn't registered in 4 years, it's a pretty safe bet it's been totalled or parted out and crushed. Another possibility is that the current owner has it torn apart or squirelled away someplace with dreams of a future project.
Due to privacy laws, etc it's unlikely you'll be able to ever locate a car after it's sold unless you regularly check with the person who bought it from you.

I dont think it has been wrecked or totaled due to the fact that it shows no accidents or thefts or anything of that nature on carfax or consumerguides searches.
It won't show accidents or theft on Carfax unless the car is titled after being destroyed. When a vehical is sent to a salvage yard and eventually crushed the title is never processed as a salvage title. Carfax is a gimmick more then anything, certainly not worth the money... It'll only show problems if the car is titled after the problem. For instance, say Guido has a 1987 IrocZ that he bought with 23,000 miles on the odometer. Say he drives it for 10 years and never retitled it. Now it sits with 223,000 on the clock, and he decides to roll it back to 52,000 or picks up a cluster off ebay with 52,000 and throws it in. When he shows you the Carfax it'll show the last known mileage at 23,000 and now it has 52,000 with no problems found. Likewise if I scrapped a 84 Camaro and took it to the local scrapyard and sold it by the pound, and Julio the forklift operator says "damn I gotsta have that" and goes in and picks up the title and pays the owner the $80 I received for the title, then he retitles it without ever reporting an accident to insurance. He could put it back together and run a carfax for you when you come to buy it and it'd never show that it was a stripped chassis full of axe murder holes.
PS: Also it will never show a problem unless the accident is disclosed on the title or through an insurance company.
