Your Thirdgen
Well since I am stuck in school, and am feeling kinda bored I figured I would start a little thread. I wanna know where you got your thirdgen, how much, how long you've had it, what shape was it in, what shape is it in now, etc.
I got my first car and thirdgen, a 1991 Camaro RS from the local auction for $600 back in 2005. The people who owned it before me lived on a gravel road which beat up the buttom of the car, lots of rust. But still good shape for a 91.
Only problems where front driver side damage on the fender and hood. Since then I've got a new fender, and bent the hood back to shape. The radiator also had a leak and i got that repaired. Then the motor went south, it would run fine till it warmed up, then oil pressure dropped and it wouldn't stay running.
Then with money on the low side, picked up a 305 block from irocz and put my top end stuff from original 305 on this one. I've had a few oops with the body, I was backing out of the garage on a snow day, tires got wet and rear end car slide towards the garage and scraped rear passenger side fender. Then something fell on the passenger side fender and put a nice deep dent into it. But for my first car, I am pretty happy with it. I've added some go fast parts to motor, all new stero system, and some drivetrain parts.

Re: Your Thirdgen
You sound like a young guy, and I have to tell you it's nice to see someone from the younger generation driving a Camaro instead of a Honda.
I have 3 of them myself, but I'll tell you about my first one, which I still own. I bought it in 1997 for $2000.00. I don't know why I waited so long. I had wanted one since I started driving in the 80's. It's a 1987 Camaro LT, which is a one year sort of obscure model that is basically a Berlinetta without the "Star Wars" dashboard. Originally it was a V6/Auto car. When the engine went in '00 I did some research into a V8 swap. Currently it sports a 305 TPI engine, and is still an auto trans. Over the years it's been re-painted, and I replaced the entire interior, changing from gray to custom black leather. There are a lot of other details that aren't worth getting into. Basically mechanically it's a Z28 now, but the body is still a plain Jane, which I kind of like. In the background of the picture you can see my '90 IROC-Z vert also.

i bought my 88 gta as a first car in 2004. i bought it from the origanal owner with 37000 miles on it. unfortunatly the exterier didnt look like a 36000 mile car since it spent its entire life outside in the city. the car was a daily driver for a year before i bought another car and restored the gta. i just finished the car last summer.

Bought my current 1985 Iroc-Z new in 1985. Was one of the first one's in the Houston area. Got stopped all the time by people wanting to ask "What the heck is a IROC"? Am now currently restoring it. I also have a 1986 Iroc-Z I purchased last year. Is low mileage and pristine. My plan is to make the 85 a street/strip car and have the 86 be a cruiser. Just need more hours in the day to work on them. Badman

Three years ago I bought my (then) 15 year old son an 87 IROC to fix and repair, then drive as his very first car. Thousands of dollars, many hours of labor and way too many modifications are invested into that car. Now, rather than risk it being broken into or hit in the student parking area, he drives his Honda Si. His IROC is his weekend only show and go toy. Where did I go wrong?

Re: Your Thirdgen
my dad got the 84 TA in 1990 after selling his 78 Firebird. He blew the motor in '02 the deal was I fix it and its mine. I was looking for one anyway and it had what i wanted (t-tops and a 5 speed i didn't care if it was a camaro or firebird/TA) Got a donor motor out of a caprice (H code) added the HO pieces to it now trying to get the money for a new clutch so I can finally make it go this summer) I am 21 in May and always liked the american cars better thou i admit after driving my cousin's 94 integra and my bro's 86 Toyota MR2 neither are bad cars but I will take the TA any day Both are a year to three years younger than me.

Yeah, but its NOT been that long since it was last posted to, I see no reason to repost the same thing that I posted before. At least I am not giving the ole "
" thingie...
HEre is ONE thread which is recent: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/hist...st-camaro.html
THere is another older thread that has page after page of this exact topic. I suspect it was deleted because it was only 10 or more pages long...
Technically it has NOTHING to do with the HISTORY of these cars, it has more of a PERSONAL history than actual noteworthy history. Sorry for being MR grumpy pants, but It is a waste of thread in my opinion. I did it once I will add to the other thread IF I ever find it.

Re: Your Thirdgen
I got my first car, a 91 RS with a 3.1L V6 on ebay when I was 15 almost 16. I told my dad I wanted to learn about my car and help fix what was wrong with it. It was a big mistake, the car had almost everything wrong with it.
Two years later, I met my boyfriend, at the local chevrolet dealership. Turned out we had seen eachother before and we both had thirdgens. Several months after, he bought a 2000 z28 m6. My car was in such disrepair he gave me his 89 camaro z28. Since then, almost 3 years, we have been working on the 89.
It needed a lot when he gave it to me.
We started with the body:
irocz hood, new right side fender and door, 91-92 ground effects, new nose and front spoiler from GM, rear bumper. The car was painted by maaco, they did an ok job. And to top it off centerline scorpion 17" wheels
Next the suspension:
hotchkis rear control arms and panhard rod, irocz powdercoated springs with kyb shocks all around, edlebrock adjustable torque arm, sub frame connectors, steering brace, the biggest swaybars we could find and all new energy suspension bushings all around as well as all new steering components.
For the exhaust: edlebrock tes headers and ypipe, high flow cat and flowmaster catback.
We kept the 305 v8 and installed an edlebrock performer intake manifold, new throttle body, injectors, tb spacer, injector spacer and adjustable fuel pressure regulator, new distributor, msd wires, 17 hp chip and march underdrive pullies.
Now we are working on interior stuff. We put 4th gen seats in, just got a digital instrument cluster and 3 gauge pod with trans temp, air fuel ratio and fuel pressure gauges. Hurst dual gate shifter and we are going to attemp 4th gen door panels.
Hopefully this year it will see a track and go to a dyno day

Re: Your Thirdgen
well im 20 now, my first car was an 85 trans am, 305, dark blue with silver gfx, it was in decent shape when i got it paid 3k with about 80k. redid the interior, some go fast, and a lot of buffing. i was 14 when i got it, half my money half a b day present. car was on the front lawn with a huge bow on the t tops and strapped 4 ways all around the car
the poor birds pride musta taken a hit that day. sold it when i was 18. missed it, then about 7 months later, i bought my 88 sport coupe. couldnt pass it up even tho shes a sixer. 1900 dollars 70k miles original owner was a 65 year old woman. done quite a lot of work to her but ill never be done with it. dont plan on selling it ever. but we all say that. she needed a tune up as grandma didnt know that she could push the pedal to the floor. future plans is paint. 4th gen redone seat from hawks. and then adventually suspension and charge the sixer.

Re: Your Thirdgen
Well, I have had more F-bodies than I can count, am 44 years old now and I still like them. I have to confess that I never really liked 3rd gens at all. I am a 2nd gen person and they are my favorite. I have generally always ignored 3rd gens and only occasionally saw one that wasn't beat to death. A couple of years ago I started to notice them going up in value. November of 05 I was surfing e-bay and noticed the 92 vert on there. I thought to myself, that is a nice looking car. I put a bid on the car, was high bidder at close, but didn't meet reserve. I called the guy and he said he would rather re-list than sell at my bid. I put the same bid in on the re-list, was high bidder at close, but didn't meet reserve again. Called the guy and struck a deal, for $3200.00 I took it home. Car is in amazing shape too. I now appreciate them much more than I used to, they are too scarce in good condition.
