Brake lines
ontop of my starting problem i got another, BRAKE LINE SNAPPED!
This happened before the starting thing but i need a question answered. Should i replace all the lines with steel braided brake lines or just plain old OEM lines? I kinda want to turn it into a sleeper
(looks stock but... isnt) but im not really too good with the money situation. Also should i replace just the broken line or all of them? (thinking about waiting longer and do all the lines SB)

Re: Brake lines
just get the regular cheap brakelines... easy to replace, you just need a flare tool. The reason they bust is the damn hangers get water trapped and they rust out, just dont put the hangers back on

Re: Brake lines
i may do that, but the leak was coming from above the pumpkin and i didnt really see a line above that, (wasnt really trying) is there a line that goes above the axle? or is it running off something to get to the axle?

Re: Brake lines
i assume you have drums, the lines run off the junction box and go down each side of the axel you should see it, i would do the whole thing while your at it if they look rusty/crappy. i just did mine straight off the MC

Re: Brake lines
i thought those were brake lines, so they run up on the middle of the axle and go above the drive shaft? or do they brake off to the side with the other lines?

Re: Brake lines
mine run down the axel tube then down the car on the sides. Jack up the rear and youll see em, its fairly easy to do.

Re: Brake lines
i'll probably try that when i see my mom next (car is at her house, bought if off of her). Should be saturday, so this means i have to drag my tools over there... oh fun. But i'll probably just check the lines to see where its broken. But should i replace ALL the lines or just the broken one/s?

Re: Brake lines
if the other one looks corroded/bad you might is well do it while you are under there. if it looks fine, then dont. "if it aint broke dont fix it!" unless it looks bad/corroded then youll just have to fix it later down the road.

Re: Brake lines
i see, but if i fix it now it wont bite me in the *** later on. I live in Pittsburgh and its pretty hilly. I heard of people lossing there brakes and slamming into stuff (usually they panic) but... oh IDK. i'll just see what i can offord. Also im thinking about going with slotted rotors :-D

Re: Brake lines
Well the brake line comes in a roll so you will have plenty. If you lived by me id do it for you, its hard to explain things over the internet. I wouldnt bother with slotted roters, pep boys has got regular ones for 10 bucks right now. A pad upgrade would be more beneficial than slotted rotors. You are gonna need someone to pump the brakes while you bleed them so dont forget that

Re: Brake lines
There's a junction at the top of the diff. The hard lines run down the axel tubes as seen in the following pic:

These can be purchased though after market companies:

Torque, I like the "sleeper look" too. Check my mods (looks like a stock 85 IROC, but....).

Re: Brake lines
i could go with the stock lines but... im thinking steel braided, then putting like Rustrepelant over them so there not a pain anymore. I want to have this car for A LONG time but with the way things are, im not too keen on that idea. But its been in my family since my mom baught it brand new in 88 (got it before 89, dunno why) and her mom actually bought it 8 months before she died and it has quite a bit of sentimental value. i basially have 2 choices, Original or Performance. question is which one. oh ya i can probably get the car towed somewhere local, not too far. Buffalo isnt TOO far away, but thats about it. i gotta work on gettin my license first :-)

Re: Brake lines
you dont need that braided junk, regular line is fine, you can bend it by hand the only thing you need is a flare tool and a pipe cutter. you can just replace the lines coming off the junction box if thats where its leaking

Re: Brake lines
I installed braided lines(rubber ones was disintegrated mushy inside and did braking hasardous)and it works fine has a distinct feeling while braking with very good control.
If you gona keep the car of your life and have the money: buy braided
If you are unsure if you gona keep it: buy the cheep rubber ones
thats my opinion on the case.
