ok, is THIS worth buying?

1989 iroc-z convertible. has 5 lines of rpo (including z-28, quad discs, rear folding seats, smoke taillights, door trim, corvette key pass thingy, heritage looking stripes). anyways, front 2 and rear right wheels are GONE...llike busted up realllll good. looks like the guy was going super fast and hit a curb or something and alot of the metal doesn't fit perfect anymore...the driver door sags some but passenger slams solid. underneath, the pass. a-arm and suspension is bent, the driver a-arm and suspension is out of whack so much that the wheel is off canter and rubs the quarter panel. the transmission (700r4 OD) is busted, the oil pan is crushed, the crossmember (or subframe?) is banged up, and there is mud splash all up in the motor bay. the interior is decent, just muddy. and the battery is in the trunk (normal??) the top needs to be replaced. i did see a box for a "performance chip"....i didnt' check for headers or anything like that. he's asking $1200....clear title.

worth it? how much would i have to sink into it to make driveable? the pix are decieving czu it looks clean from away but it's underneath and front suspension that has seen hell.....

thanks.

I would walk away......no I would run away.......no I would run away screaming!!

Sounds like a mess under the car. I would find a better car for a little more money and you will be far ahead of the game.

Re: ok, is THIS worth buying?

Heck Tony I can fix anything with enough time and money... but in the end would it be worth more as parts or are the parts needed to make it right more than the car would be worth after you get done?

Re: ok, is THIS worth buying?

I do most of this just to say I did it or I can
That's all well and good; but YOU are YOU, and the original poster is someone else. 2 VERY different things. Just because YOU "say" that YOU "can" fix it, does not somehow automatically necessarily translate to "it's a good idea for the OP to buy it". Alot like the motor-swap guys trying to tell people with NO motor swap experience, let alone experience with THEIR favorite brand of motor, all about how "they" would swap it in a heartbeat; which might very well be true, but does not inherently equate to "it's a good idea" for SOMEONE ELSE to do it.

To the OP: sounds to me like it would be a good deal if you already had another car and needed parts to fix it with. It has ALOT of desirable stuff, notably, the PBR rear disc brakes, maybe on a 9-bolt. Doesn't sound like THAT car is worth trying to fix though, it will cost more to repair that type of damage than it would cost to buy a whole other un-sodomized one. 2 more VERY different things.

Re: ok, is THIS worth buying?

ok...well, i didn't get it (obviously)....things kinda happen for a reason for me, especiallly since i've been trying to get my '86 swb silverado up and running...that's coming along nicely. i'm still looking for a dual snorkel cleaner for my '84 L69 motor. that way i can still participate in this here forum!!! lol...

anyone near houston wanna know where this junkyard is? oh, the RPO sheet claims it has the 2.73 gears in it...to me that sounds odd.

Sorry to get YOU all fired up Chief! LOL
I never said HE should buy IT and fix IT up. ( I don't think anyway)
If IT is HIS first go around with a car maybe HE should buy a pile like that and take IT apart to LEARN how to do things. Ya know maybe learn 2 save the good stuff, scrap the rest? HES Gotta start somewhere..
It would be better to do that with a pile than waste a GOOD car.

I would buy IT, fix IT and run the POO out of it .

Re: ok, is THIS worth buying?

To me this is a matter of money, desireablilty and wrench experience. If you can afford it and have your heart set on it, it might have potential. If you know how to repair/replace all of this or value the experience of doing it, it might be worth it. If this was a first gen car, meaning a small amount of desireable cars in existence then it would be worth it. Being that droves of 3rd gens were made and are still plentiful, then the price and amount of work and cash needed just to get it to normal condition make it an exercise in futility. The money it will cost just to make it operational could be better used in making a decent 3rd gen faster, since that's what most of us here are trying to accomplish anyway. That said, there is a great satisfaction that can be taken from turning the reject car that should have been parted out into a car that people drool over and wish they had themselves. Maybe we need to know more about you and what you want to give you opinions that mean something to you. All of us here know something about taking a car that most people would throw away and making something special from it. In the end I think it comes down to budget. If repairng the car to "stock" keeps you from being able to throw a cam in it or a free flowing exhaust on it then it may or may not be what you are looking for.

Re: ok, is THIS worth buying?

This is my First Post here, I'm now a Camaro owner. Last Saturday i bought a 87 Sport Coupe for $1100 in drivable condition. You did well to avoid that car, way too much money and too much work needed. Keep watching the Internet and local papers, F-Bodys are out there at reasonable prices that can be driven the day you buy it.

Im new to the site, but i have to say this place is a goldmine for firebird/camaro owners! Im learning all i can, running RPOS,Checking stamps, basicly poking around the car and i do believe this thing is about 90% original with about 80000 miles. Brakes are kinda spongy,Hatch pull downs broken, interior is kinda rough, but it runs smooth and doesnt appear to have been in any accidents.

I was hoping for a LT, But i think i lucked out enough by finding this car less than 10 miles from my house. Good Luck and Keep searching, There are others like this out there!
