Mice!

In trying to bring my Firebird back to life, I found out the horrid disadvantage of barn finds. For 3 years mice called my car home. I intended to just take out the carpet, seats, and maybe a few cracked plastics from the inside.

Inside I found a mouse graveyard with exploded remains, urine stains, and seat foam everywhere. I think I can still smell it even when I'm not close to the car. I stripped everything out of the inside and cleaned everything in sight. Will the smell go away? Please tell me you guys have seen worse?

Re: Mice!

I'm going to revisit the car today. It has been sitting bare since saturday when i de-rusted and painted the interior metal, and at least tried to patch a hole in the floor. I need to get a little more paint on there, investigate and fix the patch if neccisary, etc. I'd think that the smell of that much stuff drying would probably overcome the smell of about everything else. But I also know the smell of dead mice is one of nature's most powerful smells... We'll see.

Re: Mice!

Paint over them? Why whatever could you mean....

I was running through the car with sandpaper getting rust off, then used a shopvac on the car to get any loose stuff out, including what the mice left...

Then I hit a bunch of spots with that rust remover gel, which seems to act a lot like acid, then I rinsed that up and dried the metal off, then I prepped and painted.

But no.. I didn't specificly try to get the nasty looking stains off if there wasn't rust behind them. I hit alot of the car with that rubberized undercoating after I primed and painted, both in an attempt to make the metal more resistant and to help deaden noise. I figured any particulate matter left by the mice that still happened to be there would be hidden by the textured surface of the undercoating... lol
