89 Firebird GTO?

I found an 89 bird getting ready to go to the yard and the guy is gonna let me part it out first, it's just scrap metal to him. I noticed GTO on the front fenders and didn't think much of it. Then on the middle tail section you can tell there used to be a GTO badge, looks like it was attached by 2 studs. Next on the passenger dash panel there is a nice GTO badge/emblem. The vin is 1G2FS21E8KL, nothing special, it does have the formula hood and t-tops and the WS6 suspension with 16's. Haven't been able to find any RPOs anywhere but maybe I'll find a build sheet when I start to take it apart.

The inside rear is really funky, no rear seats but hatches and compartments like the deck of a boat, even railings and nets. I suspect this was added by a previous owner but it was done pretty professionaly, just upsets me the rear seat is under that stuff because the fronts are beautiful. At least all the carpeting and plastics are there and good.

Anyways, has anyone heard of a Firebird GTO? Was this just some package a dealer put together or was there one? I haven't been able to find any info yet.

Yea, no such car that I was ever aware of. The emBlems are 68-72 era GTO, as for the wood-grain BARF!!

Nope, there never was a Firebird GTO. The closest thing to a GTO in the 80's was this 1988 GTO concept. It does resemble the Firebird in a way doesn't it?

Re: 89 Firebird GTO?

Im happy they never built that. although the wheels on the concept look like exagerated beretta Z24 wheels.

Re: 89 Firebird GTO?

The word "Brougham" should have been the clue that it didn't exist.

8th digit on VIN is an E - 305 TBI

You can tell that GM was already thinking about the 4th gen when you look at those pictures.

Re: 89 Firebird GTO?

Like I said I figured it was probably a sticker package that some dealer put together or a GTO obsessed owner. The stickers and such actually didn't look too bad in my opinion but I wanted to make sure there wasn't some car I never heard of going to parts.

That GTO concept reminds me of the Sunfire but then again if you look at the 4th gens they kinda look like a shorter streched out Sunfire too. Just my opinion.

Re: 89 Firebird GTO?

Brougham was mostly used in the Cadillac fleet i.e. Fleetwood Brougham, Eldorado Brougham, Fleetwood Sixty Special Brougham and Brougham d'Elegance (which was also a big-a$$Fleetwood ... my dad has a '75 that he bought new in his garage).

That concept SCREAMS 4th Gen. But it also kind of looks like the "new" GTO's from the back, too.
