After 18 years the bug is back!!!!
Hi guys, at 36 years old and after owning a lot of cars since the bug is back. I have owned a 1LE an 83 Z28 an 85 Iroc and an 87 Iroc 350 and an 89 Formula 5.0. All of them are long gone. A friend offered me his comatose 86 Iroc L69 5speed tonight and that ignited a flurry of memories. I am probably going to buy it as it was a hot car in the day and is the same way today. After some thinking though, it came to me that I would really like a Heritage RS v8 with a 5 speed. These came with available leather interiors no?? Additionally I am not looking to restore a car so are there any dead mint cars still around?? What do they run nowadays? Anyone have one for sale, shoot me a message. I would even be interested in a mint RS with a blown engine and'or tranny too as long as it is mint otherwise or damn close too. Thanks in advance.

Hello Mangusta and welcome to TGO. I own a '83 CFI Z28 and though she's the oddball I love her just the same.
On your friend's '86 L69 IROC you have the chance to obtain a truly unique example as there were only 74 produced according the "Camaro Whitebook". To verify check the VIN's eighth digit as it should be a "G" to be a true L69 car and hopefully she still has her original engine/trans combo for the bonus. This is an excellent candidate for restoration. But your idea of finding a RS to have fun with is a good one also possibly to compliment the '86.

I guess I will be frank...
WHAT are you planning on doing with the car? If your goal is to buy as a small investment then I would recommend the 86 HO car that is rare enough that it has resonable potential to gain value. Otherwise I would recommed something with a TPI a minimum would be the 305 Auto... The 305 MANUAL TPI is much quicker... It really depends on the year to determine what they did to make the LB9/M5 cars faster... I could go into details but its almost not worth it.
As for the Heritage RS... I would honestly suggest getting the Z28. You could not get a RS with a TPI, with the exception of a B4C police package car in which case you could not get the Heritage stripes. As for investment possibilities the 350 would be by far the best, a LB9(305)/Manual would be your second best bet... Beyond that there is not much difference between the LO3 (Base V8) and V6 for value.. A little better for the LO3 V8 but not much.
My recommendation is this either buy the 86 L69 car (Make sure it IS a REAL L69) the 8th digit WILL Be a G, if its an H then its an LG4 and not worth nearly as much in my book. If you are set on a Heritage car then go for the Z28 with the M5... Keep in mind for the 1992 that you could not get a performance gear with T-tops on the Z28, if you want t-tops...
Oh yeah, don't confuse the 8th digit and the 10th digit as the 10th digit WILL Be a G for 1986....
The VIN should read 1G1FP??G?G....

Good luck

Good luck on your 3rd gen hunt & share some pics of your Magnusta! Those are really cool. I love the way the rears open for engine access.

There are still mint cars left yes, but they are usually pretty expensive now. I think I'd rather have an H.O. 5Spd Z28 over a TBI 5Spd RS though. As said make sure it's a true H.O. car. Also, yes, RS's could be optioned with leather interior.

You and I are in the same boat. Except i'll be 35 next week and I have what I thought was the one but now i'm trying to trade if for a 3rd Gen. A good friend of my had a father that owned a chevy dealership when I was in high school I remember sitting in a burgundy 89 Iroc. I also remember drooling over a light blue 91 with the spoiler and t-tops. Man, after seeing some mint examples on e-bay, and at Charlotte this year I have to say, it is time for my '79 to go and get replaced. Good luck with your search. Mine is beginning.
