Re: READ ME! Before asking "Is my car rare/Desirable?"

If its not listed, then I probably do not have the production information... I will not usually accept a non specific numbers, like only 3000 made... usually never worked out that nicely... so I would like some figures from PHS or somewhere that is trustworthy...

Re: READ ME! Before asking "Is my car rare/Desirable?"

What about the 82 w/ the 2.5L 4cyl? How many were made? How many are still on the road in that configuration and how "rare" would it be to find one? I only ask because I do infact have one of them and wanted to know how "rare" it is.

THe problem is that it's not desireable for many people... no matter what condition it is in... Not trying to be harsh, just honest. The 3rd gens with the 4 cyl is actually considered one of the cars we love to hate... Its up there with a Gremlin...

Re: READ ME! Before asking "Is my car rare/Desirable?"

I've got a black 89 GTA with black leather interior. I've seen very few GTAs with black leather. Maybe 5, where as most I see have tan cloth or tan leather. I'm curious how rare black with black leather is. Anyone ever come across production numbers for paint/interior combinations?

Try Here:
http://www.gtasourcepage.com/89RPOFigures.html

Its Frankie Riders page, I believe it has only the US (Delivery) production figures... So it would not include Canadian or other export info, but its the best we have...

Great list! I was wondering if there was any more further breakdown to the 84's? my dad has his original 84 l69/ws6/m5/ttops/black w/gold stripes, and every other option but recaro (he really regrets not ordering it) and rear defroster.

Are you the same one on NJFBOA, from Roxbury? Car looks familiar and that looks like a NJ plate. I've tried to find a further breakdown on my 84 L69/M5/WS6/Ttops/Charcoal Grey with silver stripes and a whole host of other options. I'm not running the L69 as that is blown but I plan to rebuild it eventually. Anyway, believe me I've tried to get the exact information you are looking for, I've struck out every time. Best bet is to hope that someone has all the info or go to GM yourself and count yourself. Just saving some of the others from giving the same info, and saving you from the grief that I was given.

Re: READ ME! Before asking "Is my car rare/Desirable?"

www.PHS-ONINE.com may have the information, not insofar as the detail like you want, but he may be able to tell you how many black cars, and how many cars with the gold stripe, and how many with T-tops... its probably the best we have right now for 1984.

Talk to Jim Mattison, he might have the time to help...

If you get it, I would not mind a copy of what you get.

I have some of the production things, like the number with T-tops, and the number with power windows etc... but nothing with paint.

John, they have it but not in specific combos. I'd be interested in the Midnight Sand Gray and Silver stripe numbers if anyone has them. I've probably got the same numbers you have as far as options go but nothing to narrow them down any further as I'd like. I'm sure someday they will come up.

Unfortunately at this time the information appears to be lost to time... I know that there is some good information for 1990 & up, but the 1982-1989 cars the information is primarily Canadian exported cars...

All you can do is contact PHS and try... I know there was a cutoff, but that was a few years ago.

For the later cars you can go through GM, they have the dealer invoices too...

Re: READ ME! Before asking "Is my car rare/Desirable?"

The RPO codes should be on a SPID sticker on the inside wall of the center console. Open the center console lid and there should be a black and white sticker with several 3 character RPO codes.

You can plug your VIN into this website, which appears to have Canadian VINs:
http://www.compnine.com

According to the above website, they have 3,412 vehicles in their database that are Canadian 1986 Trans Ams. Of those, 172 have the AS5 RPO code (Recaro seats). Once again, this does not include domestic Trans AMs.

Because the above website only has Canadian VINs for your year, and does not include domestic VINs, you will not find a very accurate figure for total production vehicles equipped like yours.

John,
Maybe I am wrong, or not looking in right place, but it seems like the 1992 Firebird base Convertibles, total 1265, is missing. Why is that?

I see the 1991 Firebird base convertibles listed, the 1992 Firebird Convertible TA, and even the 1992 Camaro RS convertibles, too.

Re: Some of our Fireebird convertibles are missing?

I know how rare my car is, but how desirable so you think it is compared to a 5.7 t-top 89? US? It is a 88 GTA 5-speed 5.0 TPI Black with T-tops with 20K on the clock and all original and close to mint... I know people like the 89 5.7 since it has t-tops but they only made 806 5-speed GTAs that year... I like it since it is 5-speed and has about the same HP as a 5.7 (like 10 less??) and is very fun to drive. I will keep it but I am wondering about desirability... See photos here:

Desirability is like beauty...Its in the eye of the beholder...Unfortunately 3rdGens as a norm are not as desireable as say a first gen...That being said there is a market for our cars and when talking about a muscle or sports car manual is usually sought after more by collectors.

That's a toss up, really. I'd pay more for a 305 5-speed then a 350 AT and there are lots of other people that feel the same. 305 AT will be worth the least of the 3. Plus, in some years with 350 wasn't really available with the t-tops, and in general t-tops are desirable.

Re: Some of our Fireebird convertibles are missing?

Actually I agree with AmorgetRS to a point, although on the one hand historically there has been no replacement for displacement, and usually the bigger the motor, the more it is typically worth, there is also a desirability for a manual transmission.

Considering that the T-top and the 350 were really only available a few years, 1987 on the Camaros, exept in Canada had the T-tops on the Trans Am, 1989 on both the Firebird and Camaro, and 91 & 92 on just the Formula 350, I think there will be some added value to those particular cars. At the same time the 305/M5 combo was available from 1987 - 1992 with T-tops, however the later years the G92 (or performance gear) was NA for some applications with the T-tops...

Ultimately it will depend on what you like, and are willing to live with, typically options options options, but then you have the 1LE's which are more or less bare bones, except for those rare few 1LE's that are loaded out, with AC and T-tops the whole enchilada.

Keep in mind that the LB9/M5 was quite a bit less expensive than a L98 car, even above and beyond the price of the engine, you also had to pay for the Transmission, which was not included in the price of the engine, if I understand it correctly...

From the gtasourcepage.com:

Purchase of the LB9/5-speed transmission combo netted the buyer an option credit on a GTA of $300 for the engine and $475-530 for the transmission. Many buyers opted for this engine in order to get the manual transmission, even if it meant losing some cubic inches in the process........

Not sure if that same pricing carried over into Camaros.

Re: Some of our Fireebird convertibles are missing?

From what I have seen, yes the prices for Firebirds were typically the same for Camaros for any given year... For example, if T-tops were $750 for Firebirds, then they would have been $750 for Camaro's... I have not checked every instance for every year, but the ones that I have seen appeared to be the same.

Keep in mind that ONLY the GTA had the L98 standard, the Camaro standard engine was only the 305.

Re: READ ME! Before asking "Is my car rare/Desirable?"

Most of the cars that were built in microscopic numbers are now in the hands of collectors. At this point, it's more rare to find any '84 Trans Am, that isn't a Y84 or a white Anniv. w/ blue stripes, that has the '84-only ground effects. So I am right to tell people that mine is rare. It wasn't in '85, but it is now.

Ive got an 1986 Trans Am GTA ive been looking for 2 or 3 months now on the net and everyone says there is no such thing as an 86 GTA. ive found out there were 50 GTA test cars built in 86, my sticker in the glove box that tells me if its a y84 is gone. It has a Tuned Port V8 in it its all red with gold laced wheels all gold seal panel birds and gold GTA emblems on the fenders and a gold GTA emblem on the nose and they look really old as old as the car so i dont think they are reproductions but i cant figure out how to tell if my car is real can anyone help me?

Re: READ ME! Before asking "Is my car rare/Desirable?"

Contact PHS, they will be able to get you the original dealers invoice which would show the Y84.

Keep in mind that the gold crosslaced wheels were an option on the WS6 Trans Am's in 1986... It actually sounds like you have a nicely equipped TA, but contact http://www.phs-online.com/ you will find out exactly what you have.

Interesting. I agree about rarity. I'm glad to be saving one.
Which ground effects would that be? I see so many kinds that I just don't know if mines are the '84 only ground effects.
I found this image from "how stuff works" is what I anticipate mines looked when it rolled out from the factory. Not a Recaro edition however the stripes and ground effects are exactly the same. My car does not have the original rims on it I don't believe. Probably different rims from this particular. I have rpo but found no info.
I find mines not particularly rare according to production numbers and options.

Re: READ ME! Before asking "Is my car rare/Desirable?"

There was 31,930 Trans Am's made in 1983... Of those only 662 had the L69 (HO) "G" Vin, with the MM5 Trans...

Keep in mind that 1983, 1985 and 1986 the L69 was ONLY available with a Manual Trans... In 1984 you could get a Manual or Auto..

No further breakdown at this time.

I would look on the block near the water pump. There should be a number stamped on a flat surface near the head on the passenger side that has the last 6 digits of your VIN on it. If it matches your VIN its numbers matching at least.

With a T5 and the L69 a 3.73 gear set was standard, (at least for the 84 Model Year). Look under the hood for a tag on your radiator support. It should have codes like WS6, MM5, L69 and so forth. The SPID I believe wasn't readily available til 84. Chances are you should have WS6. Look at your tire size if they are 225/65/R15s then you might have WS6 and Posi too.

I am also over on another website that is devoted to 82-84 Firebirds and Trans Ams. There is tons of info on there that I found easy to navigate and etc. No pressure, but when you get a chance check it out. There are quite a few of us on both here and over there. The website is http://earlythirdgen.com/forums. I know several people there would love to hear bout this car.

OK, make yourself known in the Introductions section, and post up photos in the showroom. I'm under the same name over there as well. TADan and Agent83 are the main Mods on the page. Enjoy surfing it. The early cars are tough to find info on but between the two sites, theres enough to keep you busy.

Not sure if that same pricing carried over into Camaros.
Only 806 opted for GTAs with 305/M5

The '84 only ground effects were actually introduced for the '83 Daytona Pace car Trans Am, but still, not used in '85. '85-'90 all look the same, '91-'92 is very different from both previous designs.

Re: READ ME! Before asking "Is my car rare/Desirable?"

I'm thinking about buying a 1992 305 TPI Formula with T-Tops, it's a black automatic. I may have missed it on your list of rare cars, but they couldn't have made too many. Do you happen to know the production numbers for a car optioned like this one?

Re: READ ME! Before asking "Is my car rare/Desirable?"

Keep in mind that rarity in this case does not supercede desireability... Personally unless the car is perfect and low miles the fact that there were about 150 Formulas made with the LB9/A4 in 1992... Keep in mind that there were 1200 of them made in 1991 which are identical. There were about the same number of Formula 350's for both years when you add them together... Howver there are about half that number of Formula LB9/M5 cars which I see as being one of the more desireable cars...

If you like the 91-92 body style, then I would look for a Formula 350 or the LB9/M5 setup. The LB9/A4 is anemic, they used the 2.73 gear and were not particularly quick. Both the Formula 350 and the LB9/M5 cars used the performance gear (3.23 w/350) and 3.42 w/ LB9/M5) so you will have more fun in one of those as well.

The LB9/A4 is not a bad car, it will not have the desireability of the others is all...

Re: READ ME! Before asking "Is my car rare/Desirable?"

Thanks okfoz for your opinion on the 1992 LB9/A4 formula. You brought up some good points to keep in mind when I look at it this afternoon. All I can tell from talking to the owner and pictures is that the body is straight, interior shows slight driver seat wear, and it needs tires badly. It has around 120,000 miles and he is asking $1800 for it. Thanks again.

Re: READ ME! Before asking "Is my car rare/Desirable?"

It sounds reasonable, Personally I would not get a LB9/A4 unless the price was right...Unfortuantely thats where I am at... Unless I wanted something to drive back & forth to work and wanted decent fuel economy...

Is this worth saving? Its uncommon, but not sure about desireable

Hi all,

This isn't an *if* its rare, its an *is* it desireable and what the heck should I do with it. I'll try to be brief, numbers are from GTA Source Page for 1991

1991 GTA LB9 T5 (one of 164)
Canadian Export (483)
Grey leather interior (257)
Gunmetal grey paint (98)
Drum Brake rear (62)
I think it has a block heater too (8), but who cares? Its also a hardtop.

I pulled this thing from the wreckers as a parts car. The interior is very very nice, and the car has 128000km on it. It ran when I pulled it out, but its got a bad starter right now. Should run after that. The car is totalled, bent in the middle at the quarters and the roof. I don't know how. I have $400 in this car. I also know the location of a clean 1991 GTA shell (red) if the wreckers will sell the damn thing to me.

I had planned to cut the car up for parts. I have been speaking with IROC-MIKE and he's got me rethinking about destroying this car. 91-92s are kind of "take them or leave them" cars I know. So... any opinions?? Any help would be appreciated. Also, I would trade the whole car for parts similar to what I was going to pull from it if anyone out there feels like a challenge. Is it worth trying to save/sell? These cars are just not drawing ANY money in my area right now.

Close as I can get is about 204 ish... Probably around 240 I am guessing... There were a handful (about 40 to 60 or so) also made in 1991 with the same Combo W66, L98, CC1...

Re: READ ME! Before asking "Is my car rare/Desirable?"

I own and owned 2 1983 Z28 V8 305 Crossfires. My first one was a find $200.00 didnt run. It had a V6 computer in it! I got the the correct computer. Mu husband rebuilt the tranny.

I got enough cash to replace the windshield for my Bday, I drove the my car for 3 WEEKS!
May 15th 2009.....I was waiting with my 6 yr old, in front on their school for my 10yr old daughter to finish up practice with the marching band. I was parked legally on the street faceing the school. My youngest said she wanted to play bouncy ball. I wanted to enjoy the sun sitting in the car with my book, so I said she could go ahead and play on the grass. She opened the door and got out, she shut the door, got on the curb next to my car. For some reason I looked up in to the rear view mirror and saw a 1960's ford pickup truck coming around the corner. I was parked 40' from the stop sign. It was 3:15pm, school was out. I remember hearing the crash of glass, and extream anger. I for the life of me can not remember if I had my seat belt on, but I jumped out of my car and I was now 20' away from the stop sign and passanger wheels up on the curb. I remember saying the words " You stupid son of a bitch, do you know what the **** you just hit!". I looked over and my daughter was out of the way and fine. I had 2 witnesses, adults. 1 on each side of the street. The driver a guy in his 20's got out and said he wasn't paying attention. I waited for the Sheriff to arrive and they did. We did the typical accident thing. I had NO money for a tow and chacked to make sure I didn't have a gas leak. The sheriff told me if it was driveable I could drive it home. Hahahah.
I walked over to my daughters marching band at the school after calling my husband and telling him I was in an accident "fender bander"
I told him I was ok and the girls were ok, and that my neighbores were picking up the kids and following me home. I beat the **** out of the car, while driving home (4 miles) my fist hurt like hell. My oldest made it to her preformance after I called up her coach and told her I had no car. Talked to his insurance comp, that was fun!
My husband got home and was dumb struck, mouth hung wide open as he passed the front drive way!

Here's the after pic. #828
The axle was shifted 1" to the Left, The frame was buckled by the driver side door, T-Top was out of wack, stereo shot out 3" from the dash. And I developed an engine oil leak.
After over a month of research, and fighting with his insurance, just to be back were I was at 3pm the Friday I was hit. I found a car in San Jose. I was given 9K and the salvage for my baby. Its now been a year and I am starting to notice little things, neck and left leg pain. But I was a preschool teacher for 10 yrs so I cant really say if it was just the accident. Any ways, this is my little story. My youngest still has issues with parking in that area.

The driver was NOT issued any violations!!!!!!
My replacement pic is on my profile.
