insurance

Couldn't figure out where to post this. So if it belongs somewhere else let me know.

Does everyone pay high insurance rates for their cars? My coverage is just enough to be legal and it cost more than my full coverage on my 07 silverado. My camaro has a 5.7 and my truck has the 5.3 and my truck was $38,000 new where as my camaro would cost like $4000 to $8000 to replace. I have a perfect record and just dont get it. Any insurance people on here that can shed some light on this?

Re: insurance

First off, how old are you?

Secondly, how many times have you had the urge to powerslide your truck around a corner? Or do a burnout with it in a parking lot?

Betcha you've wanted to do it more in the Camaro, huh? :P

It's because these are sporty cars with large engines, and they attract people who like sporty cars with large engines.

Re: insurance

So ben... what county are you a sheriff in Ohio, or aren't you? What are the details of you 89 IROC. Last of the great Z28s in my opinion. 90 on just wasn't the same...

My insurance is $330 a month, 7 cars full coverage, 3 drivers. 32 y/o male, 25 y/o female, 23 y/o female all unmarried college graduates, fairly clean records, maybe a speeding ticket or two but nothing major. (no I am not a paligamist, its my g/f and her sister...we all live together so have one policy)

Cars:
2008 Toyota Rav-4
2007 Corvette
2006 Dodge 2500 Ram 4x4 Cummins
1998 Honda Civic
1998 Dodge Dakota 4x4
1992 Jeep Wrangler
1989 IROC with collector insurance at $10,000 repalcement value
1967 Camaro project (not insured)

It actually comes out to about $110 per person per month with our vehicles... mine are the Corvette, Jeep and Camaros. Does that help?

Re: insurance

I pay $170/month for 4 vehicles . . .
- 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT
- 2002 Chev Trailblazer LT
- 1989 Chev Camaro IrocZ (agreed apprasied value $21,000)
- 1968 Chrysler Newport Custom
It drops to $125/month when I put the IrocZ away for winter by reducing the coverage to just fire, theft & vandalism.

What I have going is . . .
- I'm 38 and my wife is 32.
- No kids driving yet.
- Fairly clean record (1 speeding tkt 3 years ago).
- Live in rural area.
- All vehicles licenced as pleasure. (I'm less than 5 miles from work. My insurance company requires vehicles be licenced as all-purpose only if work is more 5 miles).
- I also get a discount because my house in insured with the same company.

Re: insurance

If this is not your DD and you are over 25 get classic car insurance.

I am insured by grundy with a declared value of $12,000 and I only pay $203 for the year max coverage and no dedutable.

What I like about Grundy is they do not restrict your milage.

Re: insurance

I have Grundy too, but they have specifics that have to be met...
Garage Kept, No driving to / from work, cannot be backup car, etc..
Unlimited Mileage, all drivers must be 25 and licensed...

I pay $375 for $25,000 agreed upon value (Dam expensive Knight Rider Dash!)

If you don't qualify for that, shop around, maybe another company will give you a better deal... some say one car is 80% driven other is 20% and give you a better deal.

Both the TAs are with Grundy, agreed value on both, $593 a year.
2006 Charger Road and Track, Daily Driver, $450/6 months.
Age has a lot to do with ins prices, I used to pay a lot too back in my younger days.

wowowowowow, do not do that, that would be a very bad decision, no 4cyl front wheel drive car can replace a camaro or firebird!

Re: insurance

Well, I pay for my son's insurance since he's a full time student and he drives the 1990 Sable. He's had one speeding ticket that he went to traffic school for. My yearly insurance for the three drivers and 5 cars and a travel trailer is $4080. When I break it down driver to car, I'm paying $220 a month for my son, or $2640. More than 50% of my insurance goes to paying for my son. I think it's because although I have him listed as driving the Sable, they don't believe that he's not the driver of the Z28. He doesn't drive it. He used to drive it but I found that he just generally neglected it so I took it away.

You are a 19 y/o male... thats not bad at all. It will nose dive when you hit 25 and then a little bit again at 30. My next drop will be when I get married.

As far as the kid driving dad's Z28. You can exclude him off that car on your policy. Meaning he is not legally allowed to drive the car. Should help you rates but he can NEVER drive the car b/c he won't be covered. May help you out. Once being a young kid with fast cars, insurance is expensive, no matter what you drive when you are under 25. I had POS cavaliers and turbo DSM cars, both were about the same.. rediculously expensive!

Re: insurance

I asked my insurance agent years ago why male insurance is higher than females. He said that males have the tendancy to drive around looking for the girls, thus being behind the wheel more. I asked him how the girls got to the places the guys were looking for them at. he had a dumb look on his face. I also asked him to check the driving stats and tell me who was a safer driver and at the time, the state stats showed that young girls under 25 were involved in more accidents. I told him that I should open a class action law suit against the insurance companies for sex and age discrimination!!! Again, I got a dumbfounded look.

Todays teenage driver stats show that about 51% of the accidents involve male drivers and 49% are female. That looks like it should be equal insurance regardless of sex.

Re: insurance

I get a 150$ safe driver discount [no tickets or accidents, and did some little 3 week safe driver log]
And I still pay around 900$ for 6 months of liability..... and they said my car is valued at like 1300$, and my car is low miles, a few dents on the body, but other then that my car is cleannnn! 45k miles on it, original paint still looks good.
The insurance companies are crap, im 18, been driving since I was 16, no accidents or tickets and with just liability I really wish I was paying less. My friend is 1 year older, Reckless driving, ran a red light, DUI, crashed his 2002 TA once then wrecked it a couple months later.... and on his new 1999 TA he pays 1100 for 6 months. He also has full coverage... so the insurance companies basically, really suck.

Re: insurance

My suggestion... Start shopping... Many independant insurance companies can do the legwork for you. For example my agent actually gets me 10 different quotes every time I want to look into getting new rates...

From what I understand AVOID Progressive, they may be less expensive, but they will fight you tooth and nail for a claim.. I read an article a while back that said they had the lowest customer satisfaction...

Also if you consider that if you go direct with some of these companies you lose your agent. When you do that then you become your agent and you may pay less, BUT you have to be knowledgable... As for your $1300 car, Get an appraisal, make sure its from a reputable appraiser, go to local car shows and ask the other owners who they recommend, you might see a pattern. My appraiser used to be a Body shop owner, then he was an insurance adjuster, then he became an appraiser after he retired, so he knows the business and what cars are worth.

IIRC Insurance rates drop about by half when you turn 21 and they drop again when you turn 28...

There are other contributors that effect your insurance rates... Your credit score albeit seems to be unrelated, BUT if you have bad credit it probably (most likely) means that you are irresponsible. If you pay off credit cards monthly and you pay for things on time then that means you are responsible. Keep in mind that most things in life are related even if they do not appear to be... Insurance companies have seen a trend and they use it, not to benefit one side or the other but to protect themselves...

John

I think it is 25/30/married

Those are the three drop times. Married may fall within the ages but I am over 30 and not married so still waiting for the last drop.

Re: insurance

Also keep in mind that when you get married you then technically would get a multi-car discount, unless one of you does not drive or you have only one car... Also if you own a home you can get lower rates as you can put them all on one policy. Other factors that contribute to insurance rates are, where you live... I moved from the suburbs to the city and my rates increased even though I lived 4 miles closer to work, when I moved back out of the city my rates decreased even though I live 12 miles further from work..

Actually you will frind a ton of info if you do a google on insurance rates... I guess some companies actually take color into account, where Brown is the most likely to get into an accident and Silver is the least likely... ( think there may be some confusion between Silver and Gray Metallic ) Yellow is a very safe color, why would they paint Airport firetrucks, taxicabs Yelow other than to be high visible colors... Dark RED however surprisingly is a more likely color to get into an accident...

Re: insurance

Thanks for all the tips. It just seems like a lot of trouble to go calling all these different insurance companies and give them all my info to see how much I will pay. Ill start looking around next month I guess, and my insurance company has never looked at my car, or done an appraisal, they just say its worth 1300$, State Farm is a load of crap. Seems older cars you pay more, even if there in good condition.
My parents used Liberty Mutual back when I started driving and for a 4cyl Grand Am, they wanted something like 1600$ for 6 months for me..... idk what these insurance companies are thinking.

Actually when you store your car you do not need Collision, as 99.999% of anything that would happen in you garage would not be from another car. Nor do you need Personal Liability as if you are not driving the car you will not be running into anything or anyone in order to need it, so you do not need to insure yourself, or passengers, nor do you have to worry about running into anyone... Technically all you need is Comprehensive which is basically Fire/Theft/Glass breakage or any other damage not caused by other cars... Basically if someone broke in and keyed my car I would still be covered, if they stole the car I would be covered, If a lawnmower threw a stone through a window and chipped my paint I would be covered... I have a deductible for the comprehensive but it would be the same as if I had full coverage... I have a Zero Deductible for Collision (If it is NOT my fault).

Re: insurance

Well in NY you must have Liability if you have plates.

As far as droping it you would only be covered if all the other things happen if and only if it would be covered by your homeowners insurance. Now if you live in an apt. building and some of those things happened to you then your SOL.

Back to why I said Grundy $203 full coverage for the year. Why would I drop some of the coverage.

Re: insurance

In Michigan I need insurance to drive the car (obviously at least PL&PD), I might need it if it were to sit outside, not sure... when its stored indoors I only need a sheet of paper that shows that I have insurance on it. The paper does not declare what my policy has on it... it looks identical when I have full coverage or just Comp.

There are advantages and disadvantages either way... Since I live in MI and I never take the car out when its cold, rain, obviously snow, I do not need insurance all year long...

Then I have two cars I have not driven in 10 years... I pay $35 for one, and the other I pay $100 a year... Through Grundy I would pay about $250 for each of them... For those two cars it does not make seance to have anything more than storage insurance... Obviously the benefit is I save some money because I only need Comprehensive...

On the other hand I might save some money if I went through Grundy on the cars I actually drive in the summer... I will look into it... Next year obviously as it would be cheaper to leave it as is until the Spring when my insurance year starts over...

He also has full coverage... so the insurance companies basically, really suck.

wow, then this will really burn you. i pay 978 give or take for 6months for liablity. i have totaled a 03 siverado(not my fault but bc there was pay out above 1k, it went onto my record, man i miss that truck), a total of 10 tickets for weckless driving by speed ( 15+ mph over posted limit) have had suspended linse like 5 times, been driving since i was 16, 19 now. nothing to brag bout (i guess i think its funny) but ya. i have a agent, my insurence is tho a local company. umm victory.

Re: insurance

I have Allied through Nationwide. I've had several companies over the years like Farmers etc.. I can't be any happier with Allied. I've had two or three claims, one where a driver (uninsured) slammed into my daughter's parked 2003 Pontiac Sunfire. This was in 2003, the car had less than 3000 miles. I had a replacement check in my hand for the total replacement cost within the week, and they used 2004 costs, so I was in the black by $1,200. Since, I have only seen my rates drop.

I will be on the look out for you and go the other way.... Maybe you should take a break from driving for a while until you learn to respect the cars you are driving... Not that I am perfect but that much and you are only 19. I am shocked you even get insurance. NOT VICTORY, FAIL for being an idiot behind the wheel.

I guess what I mean that they will fit you Tooth & nail is they want to use cheap parts either made in China, or junkyard parts. Even if your car was perfect they do not want to "put it back right with quality parts" they would rather go as cheap as possible.

I should get a copy of the article and post it...

Grundy here too. $235 a yr, And thats FULL coverage. Another must is you must have full coverage on one other car. I have it on 2 other cars. Other things are Garage, limited miles, must be over 25, and nobody under 25 can drive youre car. If they do, grundy is not liable. they make you sign a waiver. They also ask for pictures.

The only things is Grundy does not limit your milage
From grundy's site
Price isn't the only advantage we feature. Grundy is the only collector car insurance program whose underwriters offer:

Agreed Value (not like standard insurance companies who depreciate your car's value).
  • No Model Year Limitation
  • Highest Liability Limits
  • Automatic Coverage for (30) days on newly acquired collector cars
  • Unlimited Mileage

Re: insurance

i'm only 23, male, single and even tho i've had 2 speeding tickets and almost never have the whole "do you have record of insurance for the past 6 months" or whatever, i have never paid more than $60 a month for car insurance, (well my parents paid it for the first 6 months i had my license, so idk what they were paying FOR me) and that's including a v8 firebird. the only thing i can think to say is shop around.

it's funny tho, because everytime a car breaks down and i don't have insurance for months, i'll be walking in to the insurance place expecting some crazy bill only to find out that it's actually gone down. btw, i really hope i'm not jinxing myself with this post...

20 year old male with a shameful record of speeding tickets an accidents (none of them my fault, i swear.........well maybe one but he was asking for it)with a 91 rs 305 with liability and comprehensive (it covers hitting deer and other animals which is a concern where i live) and a 94 civic stick with just liability. and i just got my renewal notice yesterday and they dropped my rates from 108 a month to 78...no rhyme nor reason. i recommend esco high risk insurance broker to any and everyone. Re: insurance

Wow, I knew I got a good deal with my insurance company, but reading this thread makes me think I'm stealing my coverage. I have me and the wife, 28 and 26, no tickets/accidents/etc with 3 cars. Her 96 Buick Regal, my 92 Camaro RS, and my 94 GMC Sierra with basic liability for all and I'm paying $50/month. The Camaro goes into the garage in the winter, and I'm probably gonna drop coverage on it completely because if anything happens to it, my homeowner's will cover it. I'm not sure I want to hassle with sending in the plate so I may keep the coverage on it just to avoid that. The Camaro alone runs me only $95 for 6 months. My insurance company does let me designate just the Buick as the "main" or "dd" car and the Camaro and truck are both on as pleasure vehicles so that does help a bit. My homeowners is with a different company currently too so I'm not getting a discount there. For all of my vehicles, the insurance company has never asked to see them or verified their condition. I gave them the VIN's and that's it.

I have had some ridiculously high quotes from other companies when I was shopping for insurance when we first got married and bought the Buick. My mother-in-law has Allstate and she pays an arm and a leg for hers. When I first got married, my wife was driving a 97 Neon. The car was in her mother's name and listed as the 2nd car on the policy. My wife was not listed as a driver so it was solely in her mother's name on the policy with a clean record and she paid over $40/month for liability. I know it doesn't sound like much compared to some of what you are paying, but I'm paying $10/month more now for 2 drivers and 3 cars. And it was just a base Neon!

To the OP - insurance rates are based primarily on age of the driver, driving record, and the car being insured. At least in PA. After that, it depends on the amount of coverage and marital status and the company that you go with.

To those of you with Grundy - Do you have to have the car registered as a classic? I would like to get collectible insurance on mine once I am done with it but in PA if you have classic plates there are too many restrictions on driving it. The car right now is not worth anything more than liability. Once it's painted and the V8 is in, I will at least get comp on it.

Most states do not acknowledge Collectible until 25 years. Grundy has no age limitation on the cars.

Re: insurance

In PA classic is 15 years, antique is 25.

According to the PA DOT site "“It is
unlawful for any person to operate a motorcycle or vehicle with antique, classic or collectible registration plates
for general daily transportation. Permitted use shall be limited to participation in club activities, exhibits, tours,
parades, occasional transportation and similar uses”.
Permitted use is limited to participation in club activities, exhibits, tours, parades, occasional transportation and
similar uses. Occasional transportation and similar uses is defined as one day a week."

That's why I don't want to register it as a classic, even though I'd be exempt from emissions inspections.
