Re: Hottest Camaro ever?
I find it REALLY interesting that they say it was the Faster than the 1969 they tested. It blows my mind that the third gen gets all sorts of slack for being "Slow". One day they will wake up, One day I tell you! and it is not too far off...

Speaking of this, and I forgot to mention this in the post about the Camaro Milestones magazine, for the Third Generation Camaro timeline section, the headline is "Less Power, More Styling".

Re: Hottest Camaro ever?
I used to have a 1968 RS/SS 396 convertible and my brother in law had a brand new 1988 black 350 IROC-z convertible. When we raced his IROC blew the doors off of my SS 396. I was on stock F-70X14 bias ply red line tires.

Re: Hottest Camaro ever?
stock for stock i can see what you mean mr396, i mean bias plys on 14s wouldn't do as much as 16x8s radials! especially with the given larger contact patch the 3rd gen maros have are exceptional piece of handling charateristics...plus they're lower to the ground then the 1st gens...

Re: Hottest Camaro ever?
I thought it was a 350 but that was 21 years ago.
My 396 was the L34 350 hp and it was loaded with everything including a/c. I had two other people in my car and he was alone, my camaro just smoked the rear tires and he was gone.

Re: Hottest Camaro ever?
Nah, there was never an L98 convertible Third Gen. Most 1st Gens were pretty slow with very few actually being fast, and being fast back then was 14's and quick was 15's. Even less were in the 13's which was super fast for the time. Expectations were raised by the 80's and the public had already been taught that all 60's/early 70's muscle were insanely fast 12 second cars stock. (which is verrrrry far from the truth)

Although I'm not a Camaro guy, 85-87 IROC's are really cool in my book.

Re: Hottest Camaro ever?
I knew a guy in Minnesota that owned an all original 69 Z28 with the factory headers installed. He was telling me at a car show that it's an abomination that my IROC-Z has Z28 badging on it. I informed him that my car was every bit as fast as his, if not faster. I got the look of "yeah, whatever". On my way home from the show, I saw him cruising down the road. I pulled up next to him and we both decided to see which was better. Neither car pulled away from the other. The next time he saw me, he mentioned that he has a new respect for the IROC-Z and that is very deservative of the Z28 monicker.
Now, in that same day, I was smoked terribly by a 2002 Z28 convertible (not an SS) from a rolling 40. I was left as if I was at a standstill. It was my dad's car so I know it had no mods to it. I can't imagine going up against a modified LS1 with a stock L98.

Hottest would have been if GM brought out the 6sp LT-1 for the 25th anniversary.

Re: Hottest Camaro ever?
I took a ride in one of those modified LS1 cars... Holy smoke was it a ride... it was actually in HPP mag 11 sec or 10 sec I forget...
I have often considered upgrading to an LS engine in my Yellow Formula... unfortunately Money and ambition limit me at this point. If I ever did it I think I would go whole hog, go with an LSx or at least and LS7esk engine. Maybe one of those new 5th Gen Camaro SS Engines... Normally Aspirated of course...
interestingly the fastest F-body is still a Third Gen, 1989 TTA or Firehawk, pick one.
Scott, One thing that I have learned, "There is always someone faster, better or whatever...."

Re: Hottest Camaro ever?
Hey John, Not to hijack or get off subject but wouldn't the 69 2002 ZL1 cars (and Black Birds for that matter) be the fastest produced F-Body around? That and the original COPO and ZL1 cars were no slouch either (although I'm kinda partials to the third gen chickenhawks!)

Re: Hottest Camaro ever?
I guess you could count those, but I do not remember them being made by GM, I thought they were made by someone else. IIRC they were more or less aftermarket, kind of like the yenko's.
I would take one of your all stock 91/92 Firehawks against any All stock 1st Gen.

Re: Hottest Camaro ever?
Intresting, the IROC racer only weighs 100 lbs. more than the IROC street car. . .
Re: Hottest Camaro ever?
Did the GMMG cars have their own RPO code like the Firehawks and could you order them directly from the Dealership? I know the ZL1 cars were all supposed to be B4C cars but I can't remember if they also had a different RPO?
If you could order from a dealership then I would consider that factory...esp if they have a separate RPO.
I'd put car #26 up against any factory f body....even the GMMG (except maybe the Phase III cars.)

It says the street IROC has 3.73 gears, Do you think they ment 3.42 with the auto.
