for those of you that thing a service manual is the same thing as an assmebly manual, or they have close to the same things in them. you are wrong!

I have a GM service manual, and this week I bought an assembly manual. I can tell rihgt away that the assembly manual is 100X for helpful for figureing out how to take things apart and put them back together the right way. Service manuals are useful for diagnosing problems, but an assembly manual is entirly different

go find one! they are all over ebay. even though my car is an 89, the latest assembly manual I found was an 86, which seems to be standard, but most of the information is the same

 

The ones I've seen have always been for 82-86 and only the Camaro. I've never seen one for a Firebird.

 

No 3rd gen Firebird ones listed right now.......

 

i'm looking through it now, and 90% of it would apply to both camaros and firebirds, no matter what year

 

I find that difficult to believe, since the whole dash, a LOT of the front end....fenders, hood, hood latch, headlights & all their controls, "bumper" support bar. While the basic assembly procedure on some of that is identical, a lot of what is on a Firebird, doesn't even exist on A Camaro (and vice versa).

I've owned several 3rd gen Camaros until I got this 87 GTA & I've found several differences when tearing into it, thinking I already knew was getting in to. I was wrong.

3rd gens are pretty damn simple cars though, so nothing has ever left me stuck, just slowed me down & had to rethink things a bit.

I'll wait until I find the correct one, I'm in no big hurry. I waited until I found a 1987 Pontiac Firebird Service Manual.....I can wait until (if) I find a 1987 Pontiac Firebird Assembly Manual.

The manual appears to have been reprinted by Millenium Industries and their phone number is (or was) 708-895-1381. I get no answer. Doing a search on the company and assembly manuals turns up some results for other GM products and some stories about them not being 100% complete due to poor copying from the source.

 

it's hard to know what might be missing, but i'm turning opage after page and marveling at the detail and exploded diagrams

stephen, when i said 90%, i was figuring most of the book is drivedrain diagrams, and much of the stuff that isnt will get you in the right direction if you are stumped. i'll bring the book next month and you can look through it and see if you like it or not

 

by the way, MANY pages have PONTIAC MOTOR DIVISION on the header. just thought that was interesting

 

Sure! Bring it down & I'll flip through. It would be an interesting look, especially with the "PONTIAC MOTOR DIVISION on the header" in there.

FYI, a Parts and Illustration Catalog is VERY different than a assembly manual. both are nice to have, but an assembly manual is much more handy and useful
