Worth the drive?
I've been looking to get a Camaro since I started working in the summer. Now that I've filed my taxes im ready to start looking for one and I found this on craigslist.
http://oregoncoast.craigslist.org/cto/2816156741.html
Its about a 5:30 hour drive from where I live near Salem, OR.
I've asked about vin / RPO codes to make sure it is what they have told me it is..
My question is, How many of you have traveled for 5+ plus just to look at a car?
And, was it worth it? Any suggestions? Anything specific I should look for in this 91?

Re: Worth the drive?
I traveled 14+ hours to pick mine up, and drove it home another 14+ hours. It was exactly what I was looking for, and the price was right. I demanded pics of the usual trouble spots, like the undercarriage and behind the rear wheels, so the seller put it on a lift and sent me about 25 undercarriage pics. I knew what I was getting before I left the house, and the only surprise was discovering an ancient car alarm that was installed 2+ decades ago. I took a bucket full of basic hand tools, and a full-sized spare tire, just in case. Luckily I did not need them.
There is a reason this one is listed at $1200. Nowhere in the ad does it even mention that the car runs. It looks good in the picture. Could be a diamond in the rough, or it could be a lemon. Ask lots of questions, and do your research before you start your journey.

Re: Worth the drive?
if its not a total scam, i would jump on it, its probable gone already. 1200 is a steal, but you dont know much about the overall condition of the car from one bad picture. Could had no floors left for all i know. Like said before, it might not run or have other major issues that are making ti so cheap

Update:... Auto Tranny (duh its a 350 TPI?), Tranny needs to be replaced he said "Whatever part that shifts the gears" Isn't working. 156k Miles.. I'm not sure if it would be good to buy just for the engine, tpi and shell for 1k? I'm awaiting pictures

You can pick up 700 r4's for pretty cheap. There are a few for sale in my area for under 300 bucks.

Re: Worth the drive?
If the floors were clean, I'd say at $1200 it would be a good deal if the interior isn't too trashed, but in need of a tranny? No thanks.
I'd keep looking for a drivable car.

Re: Worth the drive?
Says theirs one rip in one of the seats. And, this will not be a daily driver, more along my first project car. I'd rather have a 5 or aftermarket 6 speed in it anyways. :S
Re: Worth the drive?
Then I would make sure to get CLEAR photos of every square inch of the floorboards, as well as the shock towers. I would also expect a clear photo of the spare tire well, with the tire out, should it still be there. Should see a nice round little drain hole, nothing more.
If it's an original 350 car, then it still isn't too bad a deal if you don't mind the tranny issue.

Re: Worth the drive?
I got a fully driveable, clean interior 86 TA 305 TPI for $3,000...with 30k miles on it. I sure have a lot more than that in it now, but if I had to guess, it was 5 times the car this thing is.
Blown tranny...156k on the clock...ripped up seats. If you want a tired driver to beat on, have at it. But to have a decent car, you're gonna spend a ton on it. I would wait...good luck to you.

Re: Worth the drive?
Keep looking, at 156k the motor is shot, the trans is shot, and I can guarntee the suspension and steering are also shot. That is $100 car if you ask me.

Re: Worth the drive?
Jacob, I paid $1150 for my 91 not running, the engine needs rebuilt, had the 85-88 TPI in it, bought the correct speed density tpi, It was missing several parts and am still collecting them as I go. The body has no rust and a few little dings. I thought the price was right for me and that's all that mattered. I am doing a 5 speed swap on it and collecting parts when I get money. So I think your car if there's no rust is a great deal.

Re: Worth the drive?
I hardly think a single dent in a fender is a bad body. Eh. Thanks for your input.
And from what I see I could part it out for more than I'd buy it for. I wouldn't spend 1200. I'm thinking to offer 800 -850.
Re: Worth the drive?
Well, if you've made up your mind, pick it up. I just don't see a car worth a 5 hour drive, personally. If you do, kudos to you, and post up some more pics when you get it home.

Thanks. Only thing really holding me back is buying a new transmission.
