Hey fellas, I took my car into smog today and they had
issues with my VIN. They couldn't figure out wether iit was
a factory 4bbl carb and if the cat. was the correct one.

Is there anyone that can run my VIN and maybe e-mail
me the page for proof?

If its an '83 it very well could have been a Crossfire injected car that was converted over to carb. The 8th digit is a 7 which means TBI.

 

I am always told that I have engine code H, due to the fact
I have the H.O. 5.0 4bbl L69 with fiberglass hood, Lear Seigler interior and t-tops,
rather than the standard Z28. I guess it was introduced
March of 83, and just over 3,200 produced.

But there is no H in my vin so what is 7?

 

According to the info I found, the 6th and 7th digit combined
gives you the body type.
Mine are 87 -coupe 2 door plain back

 

the 8th digit of the vin is the engine. do you still have the rpo codes ?

 

Sorry I meant the 8th digit is the engine type. 87 means 2 door coupe. The second "7" is the type that tells the engine type.

If its an '83 he might not have them, I don't have mine.

 

"H" is the low-output LG4 4bbl.
"G" is the high-output L69 4bbl.
"7" is the questionable-output LU5 cross-fire.

 

So, if you are correct, my car originaly had a LU5 cross-fire.
If so, somewhere down the line someone put in a l69 block
with the factory 416 heads. It also has the duel snorkel air filter.

 

They all used the same heads and block.

 

Guys, the OP has an '83 here. The 10th digit is a D which indicates 1983. VIN 7 is the 190HP L69 5.0L HO carbureted engine.

The Cross-Fire engine was VIN S that year.

This came straight from GM in their restoration packet. You can download the entire packet for your year from the media archives website. Do a quick search and you'll find a link to it, cuz I gotta run. That should be sufficient.

 

Finally!

The L69 was 8th digit 7 in the F and G platforms in 1983.
The LC2 used 8th digit 7 in 1984-1987 Buick Turbo Regals.
The LC2 used 8th digit 7 in 1989 Pontiac Turbo Trans Ams.

And L69 was 8th digit G in 1984-1988 F and G.

And on that note, was the official rating of the F-body 1983 L69 a few hp lower than the 1984?

 

Who said anything about the G-body V6 engine codes. That's not pertinent to the 83 Z28.
