Decoded my VIN and found something strange Please Help me understand

Ok, so I went to camaroz28.com and used their VIN decoder to see what my 92 RS is all about because my car doesn't have any stickers that I can look at (the only two stickers I have on the drivers door has been covered in spray paint.)

First, a little back story, bought the car from craigslist for $500 about 1 1/2 years ago. It has a Rebuild Salvage title due to it being abandoned on the side of the road and then the wrecker service that picked it up auctioned it off. So the kid I bought it from had no keys and tried to bypass the VATS and broke the ignition cylinder (said he had it running) but it then quit one day and he got tired of messing with it.

So, I'm getting ready to do a LT1 & 4l60E swap from a b-body and I was told by the mechanic helping me that I may want to look for a new posi rear end. So I've done a lot of research and I figured I would do a VIN decoder on the car and find out what I have.

From the decoding I found that everything is true to the car, but the one thing I need help on is that it's showing that I have a drum rear end with 3.42 gears. Which after more research from the 92 Camaro information page here on TGO's home page found that a 3.42 rear end wasn't offered with a LO3/auto the only 3.42 it shows is for the V6 in a manual.

So, Is it possible to have 3.42 gears? would it be a posi? because if it's posi then I may just end up doing a rear disc conversion.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Did you look in the rear glove box or storage compartment lid for your RPO list that would tell you what came originally on the car. They put them there on the '92 Camaro so if it isn't there someones removed it.

What VIN decoder? The VIN doesn't list what rear end you have in the car.

The VIN decoder that you used, unfortunately, isn't quite specific to your VIN. It's a generic VIN decoder.

Here is a VIN decoder that will give you specific information for your vehicle:
http://www.compnine.com/vid.php?vin=...113791&x=0&y=0

As the above shows, your vehicle, from the factory, came with the 2.73 gears.

RPO's or not, the car is 20 years old. Anything could have happened in that interval. Best bet is to drop the diff cover and ID what you have. The 10-Bolt FAQ will be of help, I thlink.

Re: Decoded my VIN and found something strange Please Help me understand

Thanks JT that helps me out a lot.

I think what got me was that the rear axle that was listed wasn't even an option.

Looks like I need to start looking for a posi rear disc to put under it for the LT1 swap.

Thanks again for the quick replies

There is a plate(tag) on the rear with the rear size, hopefully it wasn't removed.

There's a code stamped into the front (engine) side of the passenger's side axle tube, about 2" in towards the center from the shock mount. You will need to break out the wire wheel and get the rust cleaned off to find the code. Believe it or not, Haynes actually has the axle codes by year, standard/posi, GM/Borg Warner... Mine's a 2HL, a 3.42 open. If you don't want to crack (open) the housing, that is.
