Need help identifying motor

Ok well i have posted about this once before and i found that the vin on a tpi motor is on the back of driver side behind the heads. So i cant see it from the limited space i have in my s10 motor bay, so if the spots right where motor and tranny meet could i just cut a foot wide hole in floor board from in the cab and it'd be right there, then i could weld it next year when i learn to weld in ag class

Re: Need help identifying motor

Could you use a flashlight and an inspection mirror. I've had to go that route to find hidden numbers more then once.

Re: Need help identifying motor

i wish lol i heard about that a few times from all the time i have spent researching ways to tell, and the motor and tranny meet under the firewall where it goes from flat up top to a indented hump.
Anyways i know the head would tell me but im not experienced enough with enternal motor parts, but if i can get the rite spot to make the cut in floor id hopefully be able to read it lol. but basicaly i should cut it where the tranny meets the motor, and from the edge of driver side to about a foot to the passenger side rite?

Thanx

Re: Need help identifying motor

The VIN is on the pass front, NOT the driver rear. What is on the driver rear is the block casting numbers and maybe the engine size casting.
The VIN Its the same surface that the head is bolted to but it sticks out and you can see it from the top, if there is no acc bolted to the front of the motor.

And you may not see it if its been decked during a rebuild or covered in oil.

Re: Need help identifying motor

So does that last letter stand for the blocks year or something, and why do other people have really long casting numbers and mine just tells me what size it is? > thanx

Because you haven't posted the casting # yet.

It'll be a 6 to 8 digit #, kinda right next to the "5.7LG" cast into it. Rather like this (which doesn't have the corresponding "6.6" cast into it, unfortunately):

Re: Need help identifying motor

It will be right exactly where the picture shows. They're mass-produced; they do them all the same; yours is just like all the rest.
