First year of IROC

Alright so I recently fell in love with 3rd gens and learned that IROCs were first made in 1985 after chevy signed a deal with iroc. Well, growing up, my dad always talked about his 1984 IROC-Z that was so amazingly fantastic (These stories are what led me to buy my current 86 Firebird). Today I asked him how he had an 84 if they weren't made till 85. Suffice to say hes been walking around the house dejectedly reconsidering the past 20 years of his life and talking about how he probably just owned a ford pinto... Is it possible that he owned an 84? I don't think so but I feel kinda bad for breaking him....

He couldn't have owned a 84 IROC, though he could have owned an IROC built in 1984. Some people get confused about model years vs when the car was produced. There was an original owner of a 1987 GTA calling his car a 86 on this site and refusing to call it an 87 even though it was.

Re: First year of IROC

As to my knowledge as well the Iroc line did not start until 85. Maybe he had a Z28, but for his sake Id lie and say Irocs came out in 84 lol

That is what I thought but he was firm that he owned an 84 not an 85. Javier, I'm trying to come up with a plausible reason why he "could have" had an 84 because he seems really upset about the whole thing.... Apparently the car was his baby and he spent like 8 hours a week detailing it....

See if he an find the VIN on some old paperwork. That will at least tell you the true model year of it.

Re: First year of IROC

It was probably a very early model year 85 IROC-Z, but still an 85 regardless.

Re: First year of IROC

Wait a second. Chevy signed a contract to use the IROC name from 85-90. So thats technically January 1, 1985 - December 31, 1989. Even if it is a "very early IROC", it will still be a 1985 (10th digit vin for 85 cars is F, and 10th digit for 84 cars is E.) Also the sticker under the center console cover will show B4Z and Z28 for authentic 1985 IROC-Z's

As far as the 1 of 791, I think someone pulled that number out of their ***.
