87 trans am gta $1500

Not entirely sure if this is the right spot but figured id try. I was just wondering if this is common price because it seems extremely cheap maybe its just the miles they are a 160,000 but im assuming something is wrong. here is the post im considering buying it i was just wondering if anyone else thinks its a good deal.

Re: 87 trans am gta $1500

That car isn't a GTA. Another guy on CL that doesnt' know what he has...

If you are looking for a GTA, keep searching.

Here are a few useful tips for verifying if a car is GTA:

http://www.gtasourcepage.com/newauthentication.html

"Y84" is the magic code, and I can tell you from looking quickly at the pictures I would bet money this car doesn't have it....

Good luck in your search. Save your money on this one....

Wow, what a hodgepodge of crap.

The base model Gray 93-96 Camaro front seats look just fantastic with the original Saddle rear seats, seatbelts, and door panels, and the (presumably rattle-canned) Black carpet. I would also question whether it was actually Black from the factory since that's the color that everyone repaints anything that's not Red or already Black, and was probably not the most popular color for that year.

Being located in Milwaukee with what the owner says is "a little rust around the wheelwells" doesn't do much for it either. Going to have to question the 5.7 as well...could you even GET a 5.7 in a base T/A? I can't say I've ever seen one, so they'd have to be ridiculously rare if they were made...

Re: 87 trans am gta $1500

I have seen this car on CL for a while and i also noticed the TA fender scoops right away.
it doesn't look that bad if someone wanted a hard top TA with the digital dash, looks like it has power windows, locks, mirrors, spoiler looks ok but hard to really tell from the pics if there are any splits or other problems.
you would have to take a good look under the car to see how bad the rust is and get the price down some more

Yes, you could get the 5.7L in the Trans Am. I, too, suspect it wasn't very common since those engines were going toward the GTA and Formulas.

Here's an SPID showing one (L98 and WS4 but no Y84)

The biggest difference between an 87 Trans Am 350 and GTA 350 is the fact that the Trans Am with the 350 did not have the Performance Axle. Notice the GH3 RPO which is the 2.77 rear axle in the SPID.. GW6 is for the 3.27 and GM3 is for the 3.45.

Unlike the Camaro where the RPO G92 indicates the performance axle G92 is used differently from 87+ on Firebirds. G92 triggered 1LE on the firebirds, and the performance axle was determined by the W66 Formula and the Y84 GTA should automatically get the performance axle with a LB9/M5 or the L98 (US only). The Trans Am would have come with the non performance axle. In 1991, There was a performance RPO for the Trans Am only that would get you the performance code R6P or RP6 or something like that I forget... It shoudl be noted that the G92 Trans Ams obviously ended up with the Performance Axle, so that should not be confused. Also from 1988 - 1990 the only way to get the G92 on the Firebird was the Trans Am, not until 1991 with the advent of the Firehawk (not sure how that played into it) did the Formula become available with the G92/1LE, But in the case of the Formula, the R6P was not needed for the performance axle with the LB9/M5 & L98...

Got all that?

John

Re: 87 trans am gta $1500

How intriguing! Loving the encrepted info on our thirdgens and then finding out what we end up having.

I had an ol 87 TA with the LB9/700R4/and 2.77 gears....before i went to my venerable GTA which was the L98/700R4/3.27 ....to me it was a pretty big difference (performance wise)...then again the T/A had over 100k and when i bought my GTA it had just over 49K and pratically was unmolested from the radiator hoses to the original fuel filter...(esh)

Nothing better than knowing a bunch of crap-ola about things that really do not matter, for some reason it just sticks with me... But get me to remember my Wife's birthday... that seems to be a problem...

Re: 87 trans am gta $1500

When I first started out I can tell you I did ALOT worse than that for 1500

I lived near cleveland at the time so rust and all I bought em.That car doesnt look correct but definately not a basket case. The younger me would have bought it in two sec, the wiser me would think about it for at least a min or two first. The way I see it is one day you wont find ANY for sale, might as well gete it while you can
