91 L98 formula, how many like mine
I recently picked up a 91 formula 350 with 43k on the clock. It's completely unmolested and immaculate underneath. Even the paint is in incredible condition. After searching through quite a few build number threads it appears as if it is a pretty rare formy.
The car is Maui blue metallic with all original paint verified with my paint depth meter. It is a L98/dual cats/700r4/3.23 LSD/ WS6/ 4 wheel disc brakes with TTops. It also has the Slp Special performance package as well. RPO sheet is still intact in the center console as well. I also was provided with the original window sticker. I'm awaiting some more documentation from gm media archives on the car as well.
I haven't been able to find build numbers with colors but I can't think there were many built this way in this color. I would appreciate any input on how rare the car is and the number of them built this way.
I've always had Trans Am's and the occasional z28/iroc in the past. This is my first Formula and I'm pretty stoked about it. It is quite a different animal then my previous digital dash 88 L98 GTA.

Re: 91 L98 formula, how many like mine
GM did not keep track of options on top of options. Compnine is about the only source for a ballpark figure as they have a program that can sort all of the RPO codes for all VINs they have in their database. The problem is their database of VINs is not complete.
They show 5464 1991 Formulas. All Formulas are WS6. All L98s have the N10 (dual cat). When you add T-Tops and 350 that figure drops to 44. The Maui Blue drops it down to 2.
Remember, Compnine does not have records for all VINs and therefore the figures are not 100% accurate. There is no known source that can provide such accurate figures.

Cool thanks for the input and numbers!
I new the car was rare. I figured probably 1 of 20 or 50 when I bought it. After some initial research before I made this post it was looking like 1 of 5 was a possibility. I never considered it being a possible 1 of 2. Either way that is really cool.

There were about 200 91 formula 350s w ttops and about 200 of the same in 92.
John has better numbers/ideas of the formulas than 99.9% of the world.
Post up some pix of that formula, it sounds very nice!

Re: 91 L98 formula, how many like mine
According to Compine, there's about 44 - 1992 Formula, L98, T-Top & arctic white. Shows all of those 350s have the GU5 gear.
Again, Compnine doesn't have all VINs to make a concrete figure. There is no known source that can provide a concrete figure. It's best used to get a ballpark idea as to how common or not a combo was.

I was just getting ready to post that John..
I'm looking for the SLP parts on the car.
Has C&C ttops and is a nice clean car, other than the spray painted suspension parts

I just glanced at the ad, I did not notice the C&C tops... The suspension pieces I do that to mine to keep them looking nice... actually I try to powder coat them... I have an oven large enough to actually do the full K-Member... but I have not done one yet..

Re: 91 L98 formula, how many like mine
He should revise the ad. The figures he provided in the ad are the figures I provided in this thread based on his T-Top option he noted, which apparently isn't factory CC1 T-Tops but C&C aftermarket T-Tops. That changes the figures.

Especially for 1991, since T-tops and the 350 were Not available all Model year, it was a mid year intro.

Re: 91 L98 formula, how many like mine
GTASourcepage has the CDB announcing the availability, which is dated March 27, 1991:
http://www.gtasourcepage.com/Pontiac...cdbs/91F11.jpg
But you probably already knew that date.
Our Tech Data shows 5,490 - 1991 Formulas. Compnine shows records for 5464. So it would appear to me that Compnine has pretty much all 1991 Formula VINs in their database.

Re: 91 L98 formula, how many like mine
My question to seller. ( A little coarse buut)
I am wondering where the SLP parts are? I see it has a flowmaster muffler and homemade tailpipes along with aftermarket
C&C ttops and spray painted suspension parts but i don t see any SLP parts.
Sellers response
I have paper work from slp that the car has the kit. From what I found out the runners that came with the kit were corvette style runners. You can see the molded abs air inlet pipe in the pictures. The exhaust set up is similar to that of a firehawk. The muffler doesn't say flowmaster on it anywhere. Which flowmaster ones have flowmaster stamped into the bottom side. I had a camaro with one that was like that.
I don't know why you think the underside is spray painted. It is in fact not. There isn't any over spray on anything under the car. There is no way the car could of been spray painted on the underside without over spray. As for the ttops they are on the window sticker for the car which I have.
If you don't like the car then you don't need to bid on it. My ad describes the car via the info I have on it. Maui blue formula 350's are ultra rare.
I don't normally do things like this but there are some misinformed people out there, be careful.
Would like to see the SLP paperwork on it, probably a SLP airfoil.

Re: 91 L98 formula, how many like mine
Great minds think alike....
Q) Your SPID sticker in the console does not include the RPO code for T-Tops CC1 so I'm going to assume those were dealer installed - do you have documentation for that? Also, none of the SLP performance package items seem to be present in the pictures, have they been removed? Were they ever installed to begin with? What kind of documentation do you have for that? Serious buyer here looking to pick up a low mileage third gen for my son to drive.
A) The window sticker that came with the car has ttops listed as a option the car has.
I'm not the original owner most of the documents came with the car. The only thing I added was from gm media archives which is the dealer invoice. I have paper work from slp that it has the package. The muffler matches that of the early pictures of the kit. The runners for the tpi on this kit was a modified corvette runner. You can see the slp plastic intake tube in the pictures of the engine compartment. I have not verified the EPROM. From what I can gather the slp components have changed appearance over the years. This is by far one of the quickest tpi cars I've driven. It's a incredibly clean low mile car. Maui blue 350 formula's are super rare in any form.

They were all dipped, the paint was veeery thin and doesn't last long. I have found the dip line by accident on several rusty a arms while sandblasting them.

The A-Arms on my 87 were completely Black...
I powder coated them at the same time (just before) I went to the energy suspension bushings

Re: 91 L98 formula, how many like mine
The dip tank must have been full of paint !!
As far back as 1970, even earlier too I'd bet, they hung them up by the balljoint hole and dunked them in paint/primer or whatever it is. I have noticed over the years, the line isn't always in the same spot.
I couldn't imagine them getting completely dunked because of balljoint install issues? but it could happen i'm sure.

Wow this thread got a bit out of hand. I hadn't bothered to check back after getting the comp nine database access. I don't really spend much time on forums.
Time to set the record straight. The car that was on eBay was not my car. I still own my formula it's currently sitting in my garage. It's been a lot of fun to own.
