Anyone got a Compnine acct?
I would like to know what compnine says about numbers produced/rarity as they call it, with the options for this VIN 1G1FP2380ML181472.....if anyone can run it I would appreciate it. I know it will not be exact but am curious. Thank you.

That is less of a Compnine issue and more of a GM issue. Aside from getting a factory invoice which doesn't contain all the RPO codes, you pretty much have no other information available from GM. If GM doesn't have it anymore, it's hard to fault Compnine for lost/destroyed records.

Re: Anyone got a Compnine acct?
I have a few late 70's trans am's. The documentation on the engines available & production figures is a complete nightmare. I've been hoping for the last 15 years someone would find some long lost hidden info from pontiac. It will never happen, but at least I can hope..... Nice to know its happen to the 3rd gen cars too.

Re: Anyone got a Compnine acct?
I do have the PHS documents on all the cars. More specifically the 1978 RPO W72 engine option was never broken down. Supposedly from day one this was a mess.

Re: Anyone got a Compnine acct?
1978
400 (L78) - 83,282 (Total)
- 70,590 - Auto
- 12,692 - Manual
403 (L80) - 10,059 (Total)
- 10,059 - Auto
This was TRANS AM only
I know I know it is not 3rd gen related.
Re: Anyone got a Compnine acct?
In addition to the L78, there was a W72 engine as well. it was huge improvement over the L78. (220hp vs 180) But, After April-ish of 1978, you could only get that that engine with a 4 speed. epa thing. So all Automatic cars with the W72 only had a 1st quarter or so run of production. W72 stick cars went the entire year, even into early 1979. Unfortunately there was never a good breakdown between the std L78's 400's & the W72 400 automatic cars. The numbers where just thrown together in many instances.
Specifically, the gold S/E cars (Y88) got the worst of the sloppy book keeping with GM. Its documented well that there were only 1267 made with the W72 4 speed combo. This was built all year. But the W72's with an automatic Y88 cars have been grouped in production figures with the std L78. Some sources will say there are over 6500 W72 automatic Y88's made when that's not even a possibility.
It's still debated & information longed for on the Pontiac forums, but one thing is for sure. The Y88 W72 automatic cars very seldom ever come up for sale. Yet you can find a 4 speed car relatively easy. So the production numbers don't add up to a fraction of whats available on the open market. If I had to take a wild guess, I would say there were only 200-500 of them produced in a Y88. short run in production & I would "think" if someone is going to opt for the high output engine, at least half of those people would get it with the stick. The only people that even had a choice were the early orders. So how could there be 6500 of them? It an absurd notion.
Sorry for derailing the 3rd gen thread....... can you tell I am passionate about my 2nd gens too?

No problem, we will just go back to topic now... Before I get a call from Scott... he has to chew me out once in a while.
