That is the history I know of as well. My 1985 still has the black ones..... Another reason I don't want to get it painted......

Re: bodyside molding question ?

Looking at the 1987 dealer worksheet, one print revision shows B84 as color-keyed for Level 3 IROCs while a previous revision for the same year list B84 as black for Level 2 IROCs.

I am sure the dealer would install OEM or aftermarket in whatever color the owner wanted to make a sale.

Re: bodyside molding question ?

Black was on 85 only, unless the car was black. Many cars came without moldings and the dealers installed some for the customer. Many times, dealers would install what they had in stock rather than ordering the correct color. It was very possible to have two year old black moldings in inventory than it would be to have the specific color required.

Re: bodyside molding question ?

1986 shows the body side moldings as black on the sport coupe and color coordinated to match the car on all other models. 1987 is the same. The Sport Coupe black moldings. All other models got color matched.

I'm not sure if the pictures from the order books above are incorrect or not. My copies all show that B84 is molding, body side, but lists black for the Sport Coupe and all others are color-keyed.

Re: bodyside molding question ?

I can tell by looking at the ones listed on the car above that they are aftermarket. Notice how far forward they are installed on the front fender? Also, the factory set has about an inch between the trailing door edge and the leading rear 1/4 edge.

Re: bodyside molding question ?

The 1986 product book I have does note what you have stated (black on Sport and color-keyed on all others). But the 1987 product book I have does not have that same definition. Instead, the order guide printed 4/28/86, which is older than the print you'll find on GM's Heritage center, spells out something different (that B84 is black on Level 2 IROC). It doesn't seem correct despite being from GM.
