Run Channel Differences

I found a couple of very nice run channels (the triangular part at the front of the side windows with the rubber tracks) at a scrap yard with no fading and little, if any, rust. Part numbers 10198202 and 203. However, they appear slightly different from my car in that they do not have the small removable top rubber piece (that is, the point of the triangle and side window guide). The ones I found are all one part as this top piece is built into it. I'm a stickler about originality when restoring my 1990 Firebird. Does anyone know when the ones I found were used, and if I put them on my 1990, will it no longer be "original"? First is a picture of the ones from the scrap yard. Second is the one of off my car (part number 20637115) with this removable piece raised up. I'm assuming in later model years, GM decided to make this part replaceable for easier maintenance and replacement of the rubber window track?

10198202 and 10198203 are listed as 92 only. There's something about 82-84 being different from 85-91 too, but I don't really feel like digging to find out why.

The correct part for your 90 is the two piece style.

I can answer that. I have an 82 and an 89. On the 82, the top plastic triangle is a separate piece that bolts onto a bracket welded to the inside of the door just below the mirror using two bolts/nuts sideways and concave spacers that slide it up and down and back and forth. It has one bolt that attaches to the separate window track and the window track bolts to the door. The 89 is all one piece, triangle and track riveted together with a different bracket and the bolts are straight up and down and the track also bolts to the door.

When I was putting car back together from paint, I snapped the triangle off of my 82 trying to adjust it, just completely broke the bottom section off. I have a spare set of later one piece style like my 89. You cannot install these in an 82 because of the different bracket welded to the door. I got lucky and found someone on ebay with a complete set of 82 triangles/tracks and bought them. Paid too much, but had to have them!

I'm not sure when the switch to the one piece happened, since I had an 84 years ago and it was all one piece with the bolts straight up and down same as my 89.

The rubber inserts that slide up and off the triangle are exactly the same between my 82 and 89, There is no difference that I can tell.

Re: Run Channel Differences

Here are some photos I just snapped of the 82 style for reference. These are also a major pain to adjust vs. the one piece.

Well that's wild... I was looking at this door skin and scratching my head about the tabs that early seal bolts too... I was starting to think the door I'm trying to save was missing a piece.

For all the beautiful utility of the Parts & Illustration manuals, the artists line drawings just can't capture some of these details. Good to know.

Re: Run Channel Differences

I wish they were all one piece, the triangle rubber parts seperates window is rolled up, due to the window coming up to far. I assume there is a way to adjust the regulator to stop sooner? Anyone know?

Re: Run Channel Differences

There are stops inside the door to stop the window at the top. They're extremely adjustable. There are entire threads devoted to adjusting the glass, and the service manuals outline the sequence they should be adjusted too. It's not too bad, just go slow, and remember what you adjusted and how much so you can back up if necessary.
