there not getting those prices .. ive talked to all them dealerships and tried selling them low mileage third gens , they will give you pennies on the dollar for it and also said they dont get nowhere near there asking price ..

There was a guy, maybe earlier this year, who had a white '89 IROC convertible with 7K miles just like mine, except with auto and red interior. I think he had it for sale for a while for about $24K. I heard Vanguard gave him full asking price for it.

 

While I would doubtfully ever buy a car from classic car dealer, there is a market they are hitting & selling cars. Lots of one car buyers, with deep pockets & that car on their bucket list. While I didn't watch the video above (seen enough of them) they usually always mention the inspections, disassembling the brakes & replacing what's needed. They also have a knack for not mentioning any negatives, but will point the same skipped over thing out as a positive on a different car. Just sales guys.

While most of us are car guys that wrench on our own cars & find our own deals, Their are plenty of buyers out there that would rather buy from the big "store" dealers trusting they have a better quality car & its a turn key deal that they assume will never give them a problem. Not saying I understand it, but their is a whole world of buyer that will never set foot into car forum. But, I would think these same buyers would search at least mecum or BJ to see what the cars are selling for at Auction. Those prices are usually the top end of the paying market. Most of the cars at places like Vanguard are asking way over TV time auction sale prices.

I'm thinking even though it has low mileage, it had to have some rebuilding at one point in time, including throwing in new rear gears. Why else would they paint up the bottom...?
And it looks like the multitecs were replaced with multitecs ?

We talking Corvette $. I love Third gens but it would have to be a Firehawk or TTA for me to even fathom the idea of 30k and Third Gen in the same sentence.

Yep here too it seems. Actually been looking hard at them because most of them were owned by adult drivers and taken care of. Anyways I totally agree Irocs bring more $, but it would be hard for me side by side to choose an Iroc over a ZR1 or a C5 for the same $ I'm just saying..

 

 

 

There's someone interested in my car at $28k right now. He almost bit last weekend, but I drove away....in the car. The clean cars are asking good money. And yes, they will bring more than the Corvette because not everybody wants, or wanted, a Corvette. People looking at low mile collector cars don't group them all in the same category and then just buy the cheapest one in the group. They buy what appeals to them and more people wanted the Camaro than the Corvette. Plus, the C4 wasn't really anything special.

 

I thought the same thing on the re-list until I checked the VIN. The cars two are optioned very close but are not the same car. The earlier car had 8000 original miles.

That is true. I felt that anything else was for pu$$!es.

 

Having owned a number of both, the C4's outperform the thirdgens in basically all categories and essentially everyone that I know from growing up that had a thirdgen would have greatly preferred to have a C4 back then, but they were just too expensive in the 90s. One did have a C4 in high school and it was the car everyone wanted. Last year, Kurt and I went for back to back rides in my old 90 6-speed vette and then in a few of my thirdgens and i'm sure he'll agree that the C4 was quicker, tighter, etc. The way I see it though, they are tough to get in and out of, the lack of back seat hinders some people my age with younger kids from buying one, and those that are getting back into the hobby now that they have some $$ again want the thirdgens and foxes because it's what we already had and want the nostalgia. The C4s (that aren't hammered) are fantastic cars that in my opinion are undervalued for what they offer in comparison to other cars values of cars from the same era. An LT5 for under $20k is an incredible value IMO. I'm planning to pick up another ZR1 or B2K Callaway soon.

 

I am not sure what to say... Seriously it blows my mind the people that complain about prices of cars by sellers, including, but not limited to dealers like Vanguard..

I am coming to some conclusions as I become older (and hopefully wiser)

Firstly we have to remember that cars are just cars, on top of that NO ONE needs one of these cars, it is a want, even if you use it as your daily driver, there are more cars out there that you can pick from, it did not need to be a third gen...
Secondly, I must say that anyone who thinks this is over priced, then move on, we do not really need nor do we require a commentary on how over priced it is
Thirdly, Even if he want's to ask a million dollars, so what? It does not have to sell, just like I (or you) have to buy it.
Fouthly, If you really think it is too much, then find one in similar condition or better and buy that one, they made more than one, and if you can find it, then buy it.

I am not sure what the hubbub is about honestly...

 

It's about dealerships like Vanguard trying to take advantage of the average Joe that wants to enjoy some nostalgia but has no knowledge of these cars.
These guys prey on uneducated consumers that have extra $$ - I feel bad for guys that drop the kind of money on the cars they sell only to find out
when they want to sell it they got RIPPED OFF !! ......IMO, that is what the hubbub is about !!!

It is an old phrase but it still rings true, it could be attributed to the bible, but it is not in it worded as such, but there are similar biblical phrases which can infer the same thing. No one can save everyone from being ripped off, you can only save yourself... Besides I am all for inflated prices.

 

If you have so much $ that you don't simply investigate just a lil on what prices are running and whats fair I say its pretty much your fault. Its so easy to search and find answers with todays technology. Some people will pay stupid prices because they have stupid $. I have an uncle who buys cars all the time like its nothing. Thing is he is overseas 10 months out of the year and has to have someone else take care of them. Most of the time buys them unseen or sends my other uncles to go get them for him. Na I don't feel sorry for most people that pay ignorant prices.

It's true - Erik was very nice not to offer me a chance to drive his 1990 C4 6-speed, because it would have messed with my head. The C4 was shockingly good. The difference between a C4 and thirdgen in comparable condition was pretty big in terms of performance. The C4 is a better sports car, no debate.

But subjective factors play a role; nostalgia and appearance can easily sway people to thirdgens. Subjectivity even played a role back in the era, when Car and Driver picked the Camaro as the best handling car in America despite the C4's near 50/50 weight distribution and dominant lap time on the race track. In their opinion, lap times didn't translate to the most fun on a back road.

Having owned both cars I agree with you, also, I agree with your statement that nostalgia and appearance can easily sway people to thirdgens.
I prefer the looks of the thirdgen cars, not to mention getting in/out of a C4 (or any vette for that matter) sucks !! The driving position is like laying in a bath tub
but getting in/out is no fun
