History / OriginalityGot a question about 1982-1992 Camaro or Firebird history? Have a question about original parts, options, RPO codes, when something was available, or how to document your car? Those questions, answers, and much more!
According to legend, and MSN https://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/clas...n=true#image=1 it's a vintage custom paint job. Reportedly lower miles. I have to say it's not the most gaudy, and it's not completely unattractive. Just curious what the rest of the herd thinks of period customs like this. Would it be worth more if it were in original paint?
It really gives me flashes back to the car magazines of the early 90s. The stereo especially is the kind of thing you'd see in Super Chevy in 1995. Along with the billet injected Novas with all the body chrome painted the same pastels as the sheet metal...
The market is coming back on period stuff like this, and that paint job is actually kind of rad in a cheesy 80's sort of way. However, the audience that appreciates this stuff today is smaller than it was back in the era, and that appreciation is mostly ironic appreciation - not genuine - meaning they aren't going to drop serious money on a car like this. At $24k, this car is at least $14k overpriced in my eyes. If it was a completely stock survivor, it'd be worth much more.
The only thing it needs is a set of those awful Boyd's three spoke billet wheels...
I agree Drew, this isn't that bad. I kinda like it and it would not be a huge turn off like that other blue custom job you posted not to long ago, the furry interior one. This one has a somewhat "factory" look.
I also agree with the post above that with a custom paint you definitively cut down the amount of buyers along with the price.
I used to have a 85' El Camino that had a custom silver tri-color hockey stripe painted on the sides, it was tastefully done and INMHO think on that particular vehicle actually helped me sell it.
Saw that earlier today. HORRID! But...for the right price I could sand her down and paint her bright red. 26k is not the right price though they are PIPE DREAMING!
I remember all sorts of cars, trucks and vans with similar side strips in the 80's that came that way from the factory! The fact that the Camaro's and Firebird's were spared was probably more to cost consideration. It has a nice look and would good next to an 80's Conversion Van with all the trimmings!
I spent too many summer days at Car Craft Street Machine Nationals to say NO to a paint scheme like that! I like it, but I wouldn't pay a premium to own it. On a '70s custom van, yes, I'd pay for good condition vintage paint/murals.
I guess I appreciate it for what it is. Not that I'd want it in my garage, but kind of cool to see.
I'm also glad that it's in such good shape and not all rated out. It definitely takes me back to the old car craft and super chevy magazine days when I was growing up

MSN was linking a Hot Rod story on their homepage about this car today. Interesting, but does it add value? Not according to anyone here, and this is probably the marketplace for it.
That's the problem with custom or over-personalization. It diminishes your pool of buyers for resale.

I agree 100%. I saw it a million times when I was custom painting motorcycles. I'd hear a customer tell me what he wanted....and all I could think about was how bad he would regret it when he went to sell it lol

Regret is the most expensive word in life. Either way, for or against. Regrets are costly
Those were more than likely laid out by hand....before plotters, etc. Not surprised if they're off a little from side to side. But like they say....you can only see one side at a time lol
While I have no interest in it, I do like it. I would LOVE to see someone buy it, and enjoy the heck out of it, take it to shows and rock the 80's out of it! It's nostalgic for those of us who where there. Still....I don't think there's such thing as a right price for it, at least for me.

That car would probably do well at Radwood this weekend.
Then it'd be a repaint... The claybar residue alone would preclude a sale.
I have a feeling a high show quality professional repaint that is admitted to..
..is greater than..
Denying evidence of repaint and using the claybar residue defense..
Basically, if we learned anything here on Thirdgen.org, it’s that the claybar residue defense has never worked the one time it was tried and should definitely never be tried again
