87 IROC Wheel Lug Nuts

I have an 87 IROC with 18K miles that I recently bought. The lug nuts are baffling to me because I would have expected to see the black metal capped lug nut but instead this car has a chrome metal capped lug nut. It says METRIC on the top of the cap and does not look like a lug nut that you would have bought from the auto parts store. Has anyone seen these on an original IROC? It's a Norwood built car.

Re: 87 IROC Wheel Lug Nuts

That's what I thought as well. I ordered a set of the black reproduction ones from OER. Would like to find some originals but hoping the OER version looks good for the time being.

Re: 87 IROC Wheel Lug Nuts

Are the originals black?

Edit: I think I've answered my own question.

Yes, that's the original. OER is making a reproduction lug nut that looks very close to the original but does not have a separate black metal cap. I ordered them but haven't received them yet. Hoping for the best.

The factory original Berlinetta ( with aluminum wheels ) had a Lug Nut with a silver cap, but not that style....... yours might be from another eighties GM ??

BryRoc87, this is Jeremy, we spoke on the phone this weekend. The picture that John in RI posted is the silver lug nut I was envisioning, the chrome lug nuts you posted are not original at all.

Post more pix of the car!

Re: 87 IROC Wheel Lug Nuts

I didn't think about the colour correctness when I refurbished my IROC rims and bought new lug nuts. I've got the generic one piece chrome versions. I DO like the black offerings but I don't care for the two piece construction. My preference is all. Maybe there's a "black chrome" version in 1 piece. Any ideas anyone?

EDIT: Yes

Cheap too.

If anyone installs those black chrome, I would be interested in seeing a real world pic.

I think these nuts came off of Olds Cutlass 442's with the stamped steel rally wheels.

Re: 87 IROC Wheel Lug Nuts

I would be afraid of any black chrome, or any painted lug nut would nick and chip with removal. Thus why they made the plastic caps...

Those look like the ones I bough from O'Reillys for temps while I switch wheels around.

I've seen chrome lugs get nicked and rust over time. That said, the McGards I picked up have stood up very well. Still, they're chrome and not black. Which I think is where my new preference lies.

The stock lugnuts in 87 were just like the ones in John in RI's pic, but were painted black on the Z28s. The black paint takes a beating, and the stamped steel caps tend to shed from the steel lugnut inside. Seems to me they went to the threaded lugs and plastic caps in 89.

Re: 87 IROC Wheel Lug Nuts

I received a set of lug nuts from OER this week. Turns out they're made by Dorman. I haven't installed them yet but they look close to the original.

Re: 87 IROC Wheel Lug Nuts

DORMAN 611090 look pretty close. If anything, the caps appear to wrap around the flare, past where the stock caps end. The Dorman version probably wont have the issues with the caps coming off.

JB Weld does an OK job sticking the caps back on the stock nuts, and the caps can be repainted, but they're a pain.
