Picked up an 88 IROC-Z, G92, 5 speed Vert

I picked this car up this afternoon. It's an 88 IROC-Z, G92, 5 speed, posi and 4 wheel disc brakes. It has 64k miles. I have a few things to do to it, but after a quick wipe down with mist and shine when I got home with it, I am super happy with the thing. I met the previous owner about 2 hrs away, so I had a nice little drive home to really get a chance to get a feel for the car. It also has a Flowmaster cat back exhaust system, 4 new BF Goodrich tires, and 500 miles on a new clutch.

I want to have the seats recovered. It has grey leather. Does anyone make stock appearing leather seat upholstery? All I can find is the reproduction cloth upholstery. Worst case scenario, I will replace the upholstery with brand new cloth.

The car had a total repaint a long time ago due to some jerk keying it. Whoever did the work, did a pretty phenomenal job. The car was completely disassembled, and done the right way. The paint is glass smooth and in awesome shape! It has also had the top replaced. All in all, it's a great car, and I'm looking forward to having some top down fun with it this summer!

Here's a few pics.....

Man you find some nice cars, it looks great and the condition and options make it even more so. Makes me get the third gen convertible itch.

Also I’ve heard a lot of positive things about lethal interiors on here in regards to upholstery work so may be worth a shot.

Beautiful car, and I like that color. I'd probably go with silver IROC decals to go with the interior but the red does have subtle look that kind of goes with the overall look of the car. I like it! I would ask the price but whatever it was the car looks to be worth it.

What did you pay for it if you don't mind me asking? I have an 88 Iroc convertible with the g92 package with 68k miles I'm gonna be putting up for sale soon that's why.

You always think your project's starting actually look good, and then Dagwood posts a picture and you realize you still have light years ahead of you. I need to stay off TGO.

Seriously though, beautiful addition to your collection and at a hell of a price. Looking forward to see your sunny day photo shoot!

That the one that was in Davenport? Looks like a clean ride! I love the plain sides without any decals 😬

Yep, this is that car. The decals are there...they're red so they're hard to see in certain light

As I was saying to Darin, the seller could have asked for more money had he better represented this car. It looks like a different car now, compared to the ad.

Nice car and fantastic deal! The convertible version to my hardtop. Now I have even more incentive to get mine over to the body shop!

Re: Picked up an 88 IROC-Z, G92, 5 speed Vert

Thanks guys! I ordered a brand new reproduction steering wheel for it and a few other things. I'm really leaning towards just buying the new cloth upholstery for it from Classic Industries. I almost think I'd rather have cloth seats in a rag top anyways. I wouldn't think it would really hurt the value on this particular car since it's not a super low mile original, anyways.

The steering wheel leather is weathered on the top, not worn....evidently this car sat out with the top down a lot in its early life.

I have heard some not so good things about the upholstery from Classic Industries. I personally would reach out to Princess from Lethal Interiors. She would use the original material and pretty sure it would give you the quality you are used to and demand. It is not cheap, but well worth it from what I have seen.

Well that's good to know about the reproduction upholstery. My boss looked my car over yesterday after work and said there's actually a local lady that repairs car upholstery for our dealership. I'm gonna talk to her on Tuesday. My boss said she can get the same leather, replace the bad spots, and make my seats look like new. It's worth checking into, especially with her being right across town

That’s a very nice car. It doesn’t look like it needs much . Not too many of these around. I’m sure it’s going to good home. It’s nice to see another g92 vert survivor. Good luck with it.

Congrats on the vert! The car looks amazing and it appears you made out amazingly well! I second princess from Lethal Interiors... I had a small blemish on my driver seat bolster and inquired with her about doing a seat cover. I ended up getting it fixed by a leather touch up guy but she did say she can re-do those seats with the exact fabric and they would look OEM... I believe she said she can’t stamp the “Camaro” into the leather but I believe they can stitch it in the original font...

I wish I could have found a 5-speed when I was looking! Man that’s sweet you found one in that color!

I really like the red decals as well because they really POP in the sun but in the shade they are subtle... It’s a pretty unusual color for Chevy to do, but I’m glad they did!

The pandemic has me scrambling! That’s a whole other pile of BS... anyways...

I have Magnaflow... I did have tips that went way past the bumper and got those custom fixed but I do think I want to get the stock tail pipes put back on at some point...

So I ended up having different front seats put in the car. So what I ended up doing was finding a SUPER NICE set of buckets out of a 90-92 Camaro that were all leather. I took those, AND my factory seats to my upholstery guy, and he removed the cloth inserts from my stock seats, and added them to the all leather buckets. They turned out awesome!

Original seats before...

Replacement all leather seats...

And the seats all done....

That was a brilliant Idea... Good thing you were able to find some nice gray leather seats!

I’m sure someone is probably mad that you cut up those mint leather seats, but the car needed them!

Re: Picked up an 88 IROC-Z, G92, 5 speed Vert

Thanks!

Yeah cutting them up was kinda the last resort. I looked everywhere for matching all leather rear seats, but couldn't find anything. I was just going to change all the seats and not cut up anything..

It cost me $200 for the seats, and $550 for my upholstery guy to do his magic. At least doing it this way, the car has the seats it is supposed to have with the leather/cloth combo.

Nice car and the seats turned out very well. It looks like you have owned a few Third Gen convertibles over the years. Have any of these cars had additional subframe connectors like the Alstons SFC's added to them? Just wondering if you have any experience one way or the other.

I'm actually pretty new to convertible third gens. I've owned around 40 third gens over the years, but just got the first rag top last year. None of mine have subframe connectors so I won't be any help to ya

Very nice. Not a vert fan but I would consider this as part of my stable.
